Hi everyone

I'm new to this group and sort of new to satellite in general, well, out of date may be a better description as the last time I really dabbled with it was in the old analogue days nearly 20 years ago!

About 17/18 years ago, when I was living in Northern Ireland, I bought (and installed myself) a Uniden satellite receiver (8008?) and 1.2 metre dish - it was really unusual then! I got Eutelsat and Intelsat on this (having to swing the dish manually between satellites whilst watching a portable tv!) and used to get various newsfeeds from the US for the likes of the BBC etc, along with various TV channels and radio stations - me and my brother witnessed the start of the first Gulf War on a sparkly CNN.

Things have changed so much since then! :confused

I'm thinking of buying a new system (and am currently living in London) and would like to be able to get lots of tv/radio from Europe, the Middle East, maybe Africa, and the Far East (as much in English as possible, and FTA, also if possible). I'd also like to be able to get those newsfeeds again if I still can, although I suspect in this digital age they may be encrypted.

I understand that I'll probably need a motorised dish, and am looking at a Technomate receiver (not sure which one) - any recommendations from anyone regarding either?

I'm not sure I could install a motorised dish myself as I only have limited wall space for this….

I have a budget of maybe £400 for all but at a push could go up a bit if worthwhile.

Many thanks

Hal

Welcome to the forum H.Rule
well the lack of answers to your post may seem a bit impolite however you must understand that you are not being very specific in your requirements. As you will appreciate, most programs nowadays are encrypted and what can be opened by patches and cams varies on a daily basis therefore hence the lack of replies as you do not even mention a particular satellite let alone a specific channels.

Base everything on a 1mtr motorised dish (legal max without Planning permission)with a technomate (patchable) and you will open up some channels as patches become available after an encryption change. This you would have to update from your pc. Without more specific requirements it is difficult to advise more. That setup however when set up correctly would give approx 2000 free to air channels without any patching

also depends on what you are after as there is two types of motorised system 36volt system or diseqc 1.2 motorised system

If you installed a dish back then, you probably wont have any problems installing a motorised dish. There are plenty of tutorials on here. Plenty of guys will advise if you get stuck.

Its the trying thats the fun part:) and an excellent feeling when you have installed your 1st motorised dish;)

Hi there

Thanks for your reply.

I already have Sky Digital, so anything different would be welcome, including radio. I am looking at possibly getting a Technomate TM-7755 2VA 2CI, which is patched and comes with built-in cams for VIACCESS, ASTONSECA, CRYPTOWORKS, IRDETO and CONAX. The Technomate receivers seem very popular.

I'm not sure which satellites carry the newsfeeds for (for example) the BBC, but it would be nice to be able to receive these too, if possible.

Regards
Hal

I'd probably go for a diseqc 1.2 dish as the receiver I'm thinking of getting supports this.

Having said that, if I could get say Eutelsat (16E) and Hotbird (13E) and perhaps one or two others I may go with a fixed dish with a bracket and the appropriate LNBs.

Not too sure! :-doh!

13 and 16 East are quite difficult to set up with a fixed dish, as they are too close together for all but the slim bullet style LNBs.

Just a word of warning, a 1.2 mtr dish would be too big for a disecq motor the wind resistance of a 1.2mtr dish is quite considerable, I know I have worked on mine in a wind, good job I have a polar mount

Sorry Topper, I meant diseqc v1.2. I think probably an 80 or 90cm dish.

Hi there H.Rule :) How are you? I would go for a Technomate TM-1500 CI+ Super receiver instead, as more software patches are available for this particular model.

Now as for the sats, I reccommend you go for the following:
  • Hotbird 13E
  • Eutelsat 16E
  • Astra 19E (obviously, since you live in England)
  • Sirius 5E
  • Telstar 15W

I hope this helps ;)

Hi NickCY :)

I had been looking at the Technomate TM-1500 CI+ Super before I saw the TM-7755 2VA 2CI, and I assumed that because the 7755 came patched with 5 cams it would be more flexible. Why is more software patches better than the built-in cams?

Also (there's a LOT to read in the forum you mention!), what satellites carry the news feeds?

I used to watch the news feeds in the analogue days but I do not think they are on fixed frequencies now like the old days. There are a number of satellites that do carry feeds but the feeds are very intermittent and there are so many frequencies SR's and FEC's. have a look at lyngsat by clicking here select say 10 East and see how many frequencies are used for feeds click here

Yes, I've been looking at Lyngsat over the last few weeks - interesting stuff!

I think I'm probably going to go for a Technomate TM-1500 CI+ Super (as there seem to be a LOT of people using them) and a 90cm motorised dish with Technomate Diseqc motor, assuming I can find some way of fixing it to the restricted wall space I have.

can you use some t&k brackets on the wall as that will create space for the dish to move to 30e to 30west or whatever arc you will get
