Advice needed from all you streamers

My Satellite Setup
1 GigaBlue Quad plus, 1 Dreambox 5620, MOTECK SG2100A DISEqC Motor, 120 cm noname offset dish, Humax 95 cm offset dish and a few UK digiboxes.

It's been a while since I had a play with streaming and VLC.

I remember that at the time there were various versions of VLC, and some were better than others. some did not work with the Webx tv plugin, Vista or Xp compatibility and so on.

So, can anybody give us the latest news on VLC / streaming?

VLC 0.8xx builds are so far the best ones for streaming. But everything depends on CPU you have, more cores won't help at all - VLC encoder is not multithreaded.

So if you want something like 320x240, DIVX3, 1mbps, A pentium 4 with 2.4ghz will be enough. On the other hand, the best quality/speed I was able to squeze from VLC was using badly overclocked E8400 cpu (Running at 4.2ghz), and encoding at (720x576)*0.75+deinterlace, 1 mbit bitrate, H.264 codec.

p.s. VLC is not really good at streaming. If your DVB-S card is BDA compatible and you can draw a graph for it, than you'd better use windows media encoder - a free tool from microsoft, which is much more stable and feature rich, compared to VLC.

I usually use it to stream stuff from my Dreambox to another computer using the enigma web interface. I use either the webxtv or if that does not work I click on the video pid link.
 
What I've found mate is the later versions of VLC beyond 0.86i as mentioned do give problems but only if you wish to pass the stream beyond your LAN. I also found 0.86i would not stream HD at all. I keep 0.86i installed for internet streaming and I now stream HD using version 1.01 and it works great.

I use a wired LAN and an Imac , I'd like to think this gives me the best scenario for the best possible results.
