advice on alternative systems to sky.

hello,
am a novice to this, but looking for an alternative to my sky digibox setup. my main aim is to get live sport, especially golf, and maybe some movie channels. don't mind paying a reasonable subscription for the sport, but would like it to be broadcast in english. is a fixed dish ok for this (i assume my sky dish will need replacing) and which recievers are suitable? my budget is up to £400 for the hardware, subscription ideally £20 per month or less. any suggestions please?

What coverage do you have of the sky ?
what can you get away with dish size without annoying neighbours to an extent where you have to make them disappear?
How much can you afford on hardware alone ?

thank you for responding, 80 cm would be the maximum dish size, as it is sighted high on the gable end of my house and is quite clearly in view of my neighbours.(the sky installers said this was the only place for it to get reception) am not sure what coverage of the sky i've got, other than what the sky installer said about the position of my sky dish. £400 is the most i would wish to spend on the reciever and dish.

A wide brief, so maybe you could have a look at www.lyngsat.com, and check out the packages available. You can then get an idea of which satellites you would want to receive from. If there is more than one, it would give us a better idea of what would suit (i.e. single LNB, multi-LNB or motor), and what hardware/cards/software you would need to decrypt them.

Also have a look at _https://www.qcleisure.net/catalog/index.php to see the sort of cards you can buy, and a guide on prices you woud have to pay.

You'll need to do plenty of research, but there will always be someone here to help you make your decisions.

Re-reading that, I should also say that if you motorise your dish, you can get a wide range of stuff Free to Air. Also, other cards and packages are available, but they can be just as expensive as Sly, as many are not intended for sale outside of the country of origin, if that makes sense.

thanks for the links, i've had a look at them both and see what you mean about needing plenty of research, i'll need to spend some time on the lyngsat site to see what suits my needs.

hello again, bought digital satellite choice magazine and found the golf channel fta on eurobird 1 28.5 e, available on 45/60 cm dish, as far as i can see this is very near astra 2a/2b/2d at 28.2 e, would i be able to get eurobird on my existing sky dish with a suitable receiver?

yes mate u can get it on your sky dish,think theres another channel also on 28.5 east

hello, the idea of posting was to find alternatives to paying through the nose for sky and as i said, i am a novice in this field, all i was looking for was some advice from those better informed than myself, thank you.
 
Sorry m8, maybe you misunderstand me. All I'm saying is that if your dish is currently pointing at the Astra 2 sats, then you can already get it Free to Air, so you can dump your sub and still watch. You don't need to do anything.

From memory, the NBC channel almost always had golf on it when I flicked over a few months back

The Germans are also rather passionate about hitting a ball into sand with a stick and so Astra 1 at 19 East may be worth checking out. Almost all the German channels are free to air, so no payment apart from the hardware

hello, thanks forthe reply, will a fixed dish be able to get both astra 1 and astra 2 ?
 
What I did was get a fixed 80cm dish with a duel lnb which points at hotbird and astra 1.
Now I suggest you buy a receiver that can be updated via the internet so you can unscramble certain channels. I personally have the technomate 1500ci+ with dish and instalation it comes to a bit under £350 and I have now got rid of Sky cos I can watch movies, sport , drama which is mostly in english. Not a big golf fan so I don't know what chanels will cater for that but as there are lots of german and spanish channels there are bound to be lots. You won't have to subscribe to the channels but you will have to keep updating the software via the net as channels change the codes quite regularlly.

i've been reading as much as i can in magazines and on the net in recent days. i've come across a dish called the force frontier, which can recieve multiple satellites, which would give me the best range of viewing possibilities. has anyone used this dish? if so, what are your thoughts on it.
