i hope ive posted in the right section,as of yet i dont have a satellite setup, but i want to get one.Could you kind folk give me any ideas as to what i have to look out for,i dont want sky as i think its overated i just want to view channels from all over the world if this is posible.A friend has offered me a humax hd reciever not sure of the make but its a newish one.i suppose my real question is what do i need to be able to view channels.i hope this isnt a stupid thread and that ive posted in wrong section, any advice would be most welcome many thanks.

There is a large choice of equipment to get, but from your description, a basic motorised dish setup coupled to a FTA receiver of some sort would be a good starting point. For this setup, the Humax HD receiver would work, but would not be the most convenient or easy to use and setup as one of the more generic FTA receivers.

One or more of the site advertisers does a complete motorised kit which would be suitable (with a couple of minor additions).

thank you for your reply, ill have a good look at these, another quick question or ten.would i have to pay a monthly fee to view these channels, because what i really want is to view premiership football, latest movies and the disney channel for the kids.many thanks

To watch that kind of stuff costs money, and more than what Sky charge, foreign packages are generally expensive. Though 3pm games are available I believe, check out the football and sports section.

With a larger dish, Showtime may be an option for you, which is less pricier than the others.

The first thing to check is where you can site a motorized dish that will allow you to get a reasonable selection of available satellites.
If you are lucky enough to have a South facing rear garden, with a clear line of sight, you could put a dish there which would make it easier to install and maintain.
If however you need to fix it to your house then you might want a smaller dish, like the Fracarro Penta 85cm, although you are allowed to install a 1M dish, without planning permission, in most areas, and I've read good reports on the Orbital 1M.
A motorized dish set up isn't that expensive, but installation could raise the cost unless you can do it yourself.
Have a read through the dishes section to see other members motorized dishes and some sticky threads on hoe to set it up:

Channel Master 1.8m + showtime card + receiver of your choice that would read Irdeto card. That may be a little over budget if you can't get a 2nd hand dish, but a Gibertini 1.5m would probably do it (£300 new), but can't confirm as I have not tried one.

firstly many thanks to both mickha and robbo,ok i live in a flat on the 2nd floor(theres only three floors)the guy upstairs has a sky dish so theres no problem putting another up there,i forgot to mention that at the moment we have bt vision but its very limited unless you pay for certain channels which then bumps the monthly price right up.however we like the idea of a internal hardrive and the fact you can pause rewind live tv is this possible with certain recievers, once again thank you for your help.
