Hi technical guru's....

Question for you, hopefully i can explain myself clearly....

I have a motorised dish, quad lnband main receiver in the lounge. I want to send the signal to a couple of other rooms.

Im aware that i wont be able to move the dish from receivers in other rooms but my question is... Can i take the cables from the dish into the loft and connect them to the existing Freeview aerial cables that all come up to the booster in the loft ??? Meaning that i wouldnt have to run cables into the rooms and that i would utilise the existing aerial wall sockets in rooms ??

Yes but it would be expensive.

Assuming you have two spare ouputs from your LNB you will need two splitter/combiners in the loft and the same again in the rooms concerned. You will also need to replace the aerial leads from the splitter/combiners to each room as they almost certainly won't be up to the job of the higher frequencies involved with satellite.
 
If i have the coax cables going into an amplifier up in the loft can i not just connect thta cable direct to the new cables run from the LNB ?? so basically 1 continuous cable from LNB to wall socket ?? Not sure why i would need a splitter ?
 
just run another 2 lenghts of sat cable from the dish and run it into the loft and down to the other 2 rooms ?
 
Yep, i could do that, was just hoping not to have cables coming down the walls/trunking and could utilise the existing wall ports.
 
I thought you wanted to combine the terrestrial and satellite signals, not replace them. You could only, satisfactorily, do it the way that you want if the cable from the loft to the rooms is of digital satellite grade (double shielded). This means that it has a fairly dense copper braid shielding with a copper foil - standard old style TV aerial cable is single shielded with a somewhat whispy copper braid.

Then, of course, you would have the extra joins in the loft and rooms concerned. When you say to use the existing wall port I assume you mean the hole in the wall where the cable descends to, not the physical plate on the wall. A standard TV plate is just not up to the job and you would need a Belling-Lee to F type converter at the least. This means an awful lot of joins with the possibilty of introducing weak points for interference to get in and loss of signal.
 
Nope, not too worried about the terrestrial antenna. The rest of your reply now makes sense, so in theory yes its possible, but in reality i would be looking at signal quality issues.
 
You may be able to get away with it if the runs of the inferior cable are short. Try it and see. Also try without the wall plates first.
 
Run two feeds from the dish into the loft. Then terminate them to the two cables in question using F connectors and couplers. The cable lengths from what I can remember aren't long enough to worry about excessive signal loss. Change the outlet plates to F type.

Take care when connecting cables to LNb as not to disturb the dish alignment. If needed drive the dish to a position where access is easier.
 
Cheers for all your advice. I would say from Dish to loft connection about 4m, then from connection to bedroom face plate about another 4/5m. If i went into spare room downstairs that may be about 4m + 7/8m maybe. I'll give it a go on one of the bedroom runs and see what its like.

4/5m should be OK, I have seen TV coax used for longer runs than that and still works OK. 12m may be pushing it, but probably OK.
 
Cabling maybe aluminium screened/shielded as in the case of most newer builds, possibly copper screening in some cases. Cable lengths are fairly short so negligible.
