Always been a fan of Alan's plays and diary jottings. Read most of his stuff, the Talking Head monologues on TV etc.
Not afraid to tell a story or joke against himself, viz the time he was on a train, and the guy opposite him mentioned about a sweepstale held in his office, on which well-known personality would die next. ‘They haven’t had a win for some time,’ writes Bennett, 82. ‘Their last bonanza coming with the death of Spike Milligan. I laugh about this when he tells me, but I find it depressing to think that even in a light-hearted way there is at least one family in the kingdom waiting (if not longing) for my death.’
Plenty of well-known personalities dying this year, as we have posted elsewhere (sorry to be so morbid, hopefully the year finishes without more bucket-kicking...)
