No they didn't stop paying the bills (well, actually some they did, but this was not a problem for ERT). As a matter of fact ERT had a surplus of 50-60 million euros the last two years. The decision to close the channels is purely political, in order (mainly) to satisfy the promise to the troika from the greek goverment (bliah) to suck a number of public servants (ERT employs 2650 of them, although none is paid from the state budget, so there will be no economic savings at all with the closing of ERT).sonnetpete said:Having looked it up on Wiki, it's interesting that the Greek television licence is paid through electric bills. For each account (whether business premises or offices) the contribution is €51.60. Doesn't seem a lot but in 2006 the revenue was €262.6M......So, have the Greeks stopped paying their electric bills?
Oh the government have kindly suspended the licence payments as there is no official TV broadcast to watch....
