Hi,
I've been a subscriber to CanalSat for some years. The current receiver that you get as standard is about 4 years old. It always was pretty ropey - slow and prone to hangs - but a recent update has rendered it nearly unusable. The icing on the cake is that it now takes a good 15 minutes to start up, which naturally means I've turned off the "eco" option (turns itself off after x hours of inactivity).

The upshot is that I'd like to get rid of the rented decoder and replace it with something that isn't rubbish. The list of "Canal Ready" decoders doesn't fill me with confidence. I'd like to avoid being messed around by updates that can only be loaded by an official decoder etc. I'd appreciate any advice on buying a suitable decoder - I'd like twin tuner, pvr, inbuilt disk, HD, preferably linux. Any ideas? :)

Can't you just get a CAM and stick it into any receiver you please?

Edit: looks like this is for terrestrial only... not sure if TNTSAT stuff with work with CanalSat.

There's always BisTV...

For satellite I don't *think* so:

the site above says:

Module Canal Ready TNT Terrestre CI+ CANAL+ sans décodeur supplémentaire !

TNT Terrestre means terrestial digital TV. It goes on to say (roughly translated) - "for satellite you have to buy a TNTSAT Canal Ready terminal".

Of course, that might just be the official line.... :) Looking at the French forums it appears to be the case that a cam can work, but not for HD. For HD it has to be a Canal Ready terminal.

hxxp://www.maisondunumerique.com/module-cam-pcmcia-astoncrypt-2.html

gives a summary of the cam possibilities, although I'm not sure how up-to-date it is.

I've looked at Bis - one of the things we like about CanalSat is the selection of films, many of which are available in their original languages (95% English for foreign films). Not sure that we'd get that with Bis.

Not a lot of films in English on BIS as far as i know. Most of the film stuff on BIS is just in French.

The one decoder you could possibly look at is the Cristor Atlas HD100, although i would suggest you ask around on the kyng forum as to wether or not these doecoders can indeed decode the HD channels, although i am pretty sure they can.

They can also be used to share the card to another receciver elsewhere in the house if needed. They may be available in France, although the only place i have managed to find one is on eBay.
If they are anything like the old Atlas-E it should be OK. They will also decode Fransat and TNTSat cards.

Hmm - thanks for the suggestion but it's single tuner. 2Galli have other options though, although it's difficult to tell if they're Canal Ready or not (although some are marked "module Viaccess SMIT SECURE").
