Most people will not have heard of Russ Heath but a lot will be familiar with some of his work.
I was first aware of his work (although I didn't know it at the time) from the back pages of the many American comics I read in the 60s. He drew the picture that accompanied the advert for 132 Roman Soldiers for $2.98.
He specialised in war stories and one of his panels was used by Roy Lichtenstein for his Whaam! painting. Lichtenstein got millions and Heath got nothing.
He had an interesting life and at one point stayed in Hugh Heffner's mansion after finishing an art job. Everyone assumed he had a right to be there and he was able to blag several months of free accommodation, food and women.
RIP Russ
Russ Heath
(I'm a bit late posting this and only found out when following some links after learning about Mike Noble)
