Customers of British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC (BSky:cool: has a lot to look forward to this coming March 2012. The digital satellite company recently announced the launch of their all-new channel dedicated to providing subscribers with in-depth and high-definition coverage of Formula 1 motor racing next year.

The 2012 F1 season is scheduled to take place March 16 in Melbourne, Australia, and BSkyB will be there every step of the way to capture the entire event on camera. Aside from covering all 20 races from March to November, Sky will also be broadcasting all the practice plus qualifying sessions, which should provide subscribers with an even fuller viewing experience.

"This brand-new channel again proves Sky's commitment to investing in the best content for customers. It will give even more value to Sky customers and create another reason for others to consider pay TV," said Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Darroch.

The new channel, “Sky Sports F1 HD," will be made available at no additional costs to consumers who have subscribed to Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2, or the HD pack of channels. As for those that don’t have the HD package, they’ll still be given access to the dedicated Formula 1 channel, but in the standard definition only.

Yet another sad day in the F1 calendar, when British fans will be denied the opportunity to watch the build up and races FOC for a significant part of the season, but as others have mentioned we will have to make more use of our sat setups to watch in another language.

For a non-subscriber looking to get this channel it will cost:

£20.00 or £25.00 pcm for standard or extra,
plus £20.00 pcm for Sky Sports,
plus £10.25 pcm to watch in HD.

So for just £663 per annum we'll be able to watch the same Grande Prix that up until now we have been watching without subscription on BBC1 HD.

you either have to have sky sports or the hd pack to receive the new f1 channel, i was told so £30.25 the minimum to get the f1 channel.

cable viewers may miss out if no deal can be reached, i will get it anyway with having the hd pack but would be watching rtl anyway.

Will be zapping between RTL and TF1(Suisse) on 9E to miss ads.

Possibly Rai Uno as well if I ever get a TivùSat Card!

I caught the last 6 laps on TF1 on TNTSAT - 19E. The programme ended pretty quickly after the end of the race.

Sounds good ............... the pre and post race stuff is virtually always tedious.

I looked at the website but it wasn't really clear to me. Anyway absolute minimum price if you are correct is still £363.

I recall the coverage on one of the subcription packages, could have been Sky Germany, in its previous incarnation, and they used 4 or more channels, to show each race, including a pit cam, a replay channel, showing highlights of the race so far, and at least two different camera positions of the race.
Sky UK has a long way to go to make Formula 1 fans happy.

The sudden end of the programme could have been due to a power failure in the TV compound which took all broadcasters off-air. This was according to a tweet from Jake.

It will be interesting to see how far $ky are prepared to go in terms of taking different feeds. It's a fact that FOM (Formula One Management) supply all the feeds to the differing TV companies. IIRC, there's even an option to take a feed from each car if they wanted. I don't think that the BBC supply OB cameras for British GP for instance, or indeed any GP host country broadcasting company. (Though the BBC may have their own travelling camera crew for the 'talking heads') I think it's all supplied by FOM (i.e. Bernie). In my opinion the BBC did an excellent job in producing a balanced coverage of a race. Whether $ky will be as sympathetic remains to be seen (or not in my case as I refuse to pay to see F1 on TV).
