Angel to skyDSL's rescue
German broadband internet via satellite service skyDSL has been rescued from closure by Swiss investment group Mountain Super Angel.
Mountain Super Angel has bought 80 per cent of the shares, while the remaining 20 per cent will continue to be held by Berlin-based internet provider Teles. Financial details were not disclosed.
The new shareholder, which acquired the option of a majority takeover at the beginning of January, wants to boost marketing of the service in other European countries, including France, Spain and Eastern Europe, next to its existing German-language markets. In addition to the one-way service, Eutelsat’s two-way solution Tooway will also be offered from early this year. The service functions without a telephone or mobile phone line for the return channel as data is sent in both directions via satellite. Mountain Super Angel is already a shareholder in MVOX AG, which operates wireless broadband internet access services in rural regions of Germany based on WiMAX technology.
In September 2007 Teles announced its intention to withdraw from the business area of internet via satellite due to economic considerations, mainly due to larger than anticipated penetration of conventional ADSL-based broadband internet access. Since then the company has been looking for a buyer or strategic partner.
SkyDSL offers fast internet connections to private and business customers who live outside areas where broadband access via ADSL or cable networks is offered.
