I recently took the plunge and moved from an Old Sky Box to Sky+ 160 and would like to know if anyone has details of the USB ports yet. Will we be able to interface a PC or DVD Writer to this in the future? (Now would be great so I don't have to keep deleting stuff to keep the box free, but can archive to DVD).

Shame you can't cut out the adverts like some other boxes do (friend can do this in the US).

Sky plans to enable USB ports for use with Thomson Lyra portable video player (40gig HDD) so you can watch recorded programmes on the go. Content will be rights protected so no chance of recording to PC anytime soon. Software upgrade will soon allow sky+ viewers to record programmes without ads.

Whohowwwwww! You can't just slip that one in without an explanation. It is the first time I have seen it mentioned on ANY forum. Popular thinking is that any change to ad handling would be to disable FF during ads NOT make it easier to skip them.

Please advise where you got this info. Thanks.

Quote from www.wotsat.com:

Sky to launch ad-free TV viewing service
Sky has reportedly patented a new technology that allows viewers to record programmes without any ad breaks. While the Sky + personal video recorder allows users to skip through advertisements, even when played at 30 times normal speed, the ads can still be seen by viewers. Sky hopes to offer a service that allows viewers much greater control. One patent, filed in August 2000, allows viewers to "interrupt the recording of programmes so as not to record adverts". It could also allow viewers to edit shows so that only favourite acts were recorded from music programmes. [Jan 5]

The facility to miss out adverts during a recording was also touted on VCR's in the late 90's, but it failed to hit the shop shelves. Which is hardly suprising as most TV Co's (inc chennels on Sky) rely on revenue from advertising. If I were Mr Cillit Bang Liquid or Ms Bachelours cuppa-Soup, I'd threaten to not advertise anymore, after all if people are no longer watching my add why bother!

Skipping adverts would be great, but as mentioned the problem with this is the Advertisers would start to no longer use this for advertising, if that were the case. I know this is available on some systems in the US, so maybe we'll see it here in the future (fingers crossed).

Ref: USB Ports, heard that they may just be available for specific systems to use. But I guess this will unfold with time. Once again they may not be able to allow copy to DVD as this could violate the contracts they have. Whilst the Film etc.. is on the Sky+ HardDrive it is encrypted etc..

I have just been back to the UK to buy my new 160 (and get the card married while I was there). I asked the bloke in the (independant) satellite warehouse where I bought it from if he knew what the USB ports were for.

He said that as far as he knew they were for a Sky video jukebox to be launched later this year. So I said that if i bought a goodmans one now for instance would it also work in the USB's.... No Sky need to enable them via a download and it will only work with the Sky Video Jukebox once it arrives on the shop shelves!

Hmmmm.

I'll be very surprised if you are able to do that, it would be most unlike Sky to enable a feature for fast copy of films and bear in mind that the recordings on the hard drive are encrypted.

It will be wired up - they wouldnt be much good if they werent connected to anything!, You can guarantee the USB ports are currently software disabled, and wont do anything until a future s/w release.

Also, the Sky installer is very often the last man in the information chain, they normally only know what they are told and they are told only what they need to know. :)
