Is there any chance of keeping an AOL email address if the customer decides to cancel after being a 10 year subscriber to their 'service' ?

Not in the long term.

When you leave, the original EMail address(es) remain available for 6 months or so and are then removed. This is purely to allow migration, nothing more.

Had the same problem with an old Wanadoo (Orange) account - IIRC the period was actually 12 months - but whatever the precise period, it cannot continue ad infinitum and will be chopped.

A friend of mine has kept his AOL email address after changing to cable for broadband by paying them money each month. How much I'm not sure.

I don't know if this helps but.....

When AOL pulled the plug on dial up support here and said we couldn't have broadband, we changed to Orange Broadband and cancelled the AOL account (which was still under aol.co.uk). The seven 'screenames' (i.e. email accounts) we had were still live over three years later. After my wife died (it was her AOL account) I managed to delete all but the 'master screename' which AOL refused to let me cancel. It's still in use nearly five years after cancelling. I think AOL just let you use it as a free email address like gmail, hotmail et al.
