I saw - 2001, A Space Odyssey - when I my father took me to the cinema. I was four at the time.

He was the first to suggest the idea of geostationary satellites. He gave us our hobby :) :-worship :-worship

2001 was the first film I ever saw in the cinema as well :D

Sad news indeed. This hobby owes much to his original contributions way back in the '40s.

I hope his ashes are sent into geophysical orbit :)

I reread some of his books a couple of years ago - some of the story lines hold up remarkable well despite the passing of the years.

I do like the idea of the manned tv relay orbital stations in some of the books :D

Another legend passes on. I saw 2001 at the Abbey Cinerama in Liverpool gawd knows how many years ago. Blew me away and I went and bought the LP (yes LP) which I still have.

Read just about everything of his over the course of the years. You always tell the quality of his writing and the deepthought that had gone on before pen was put to paper.

LOL, there's a few of us who went to see 2001 in Cinerama. :) My Dad took us, can't remember how old I was, but it was on the first release. :)

By the way, it wasn't Arthur who first came up wit the concept of permanent sats, it was George Smith who wrote a series of stories called "Venus Equilateral". This fact was also acknowledged by Clarke, who even wrote about this in Georges book. But they were both pioneers. It's a bit like America, discovered by Colombus but named after America Vespucci

Very sad to hear this visionary has passed away. I have to say though his innings was one of the longest going and filled with so much discovery and pioneering work.
