The old Astras seem to end up at silly locations lately, like Astra 3A at 176.9° W, or Astra 1D at 67.6° W.

Astra 1H indeed has spent from end August 2014 to halfway May 2015 at 67.6°W, together with Astra 1D that remains there.

Since then Astra 1H travelled back East, and now seems to have found a standby location near 47.7° W, right next to NSS-806 at 47.5°W.

Maybe this has to do with future NSS-806 replacement SES-14, due to launch in 2017 ?
Also I wonder if NSS-806 can last that long.

Are either 1D or 1H transmitting anything?

Not as far as I know, they are both inclined and at 67.6°W, probably beaming towards the Americas.
Now with 1H at 47.7°W, maybe more luck?

Can't see 2D being much use any more, I suppose they might use it for occasional feeds at 5E?

After Astra 1H that moved from 67.6°W to 47.7°W, also Astra 1D has left 67.6°W.
Now near 62°W, moving 0.5° E/day. If moving East, not dead yet!

Looks like Astra 1D has stopped at about 47.2°W.
So we have a little cluster now:

47.7°W : Astra 1H (inclined 2.5°)
47.5°W : NSS-806
47.2°W : Astra 1D (inclined 6.5°)

Maybe 1D is still moving a little further, 47.05°W used to be the location of NSS-703 (retired in Nov 2014).

The whereabouts of Astra 1H since 2013.
Right now, drifting to 55.325°E according CoB. Yes, accuracy in 3 decimals!
Arrival will be mid-August. Inclination 3.1° already.

I suspect that's Precision rather than Accuracy ;)

Yes indeed.

The very first thing I learned during my First Year University Module on Instrumentation was how to distinguish between Precision and Accuracy.

At its most basic, Precision might relate, as in this case, to the available number of decimal places the readout allows. But greater Precision is of no value if the method of quantifying the property being evaluated is not Accurate.

Say, for example, your car speedo says you are travelling at 57.869 kph ....... well, as the way speed is measured is notoriously inaccurate, albeit designed always to over-report, you might actually only be doing 52 kph. Consequently, the "precise" readout is misleading.

Methods of speed enforcement used by the Police will be highly accurate (In theory) but it might still not be necessary to apply more precision than, say, one decimal place.

Does that make sense?

So, in the case above, it's all well and good giving the Satellite position to 3 decimal places, but it's well know the figure is likely to be wrong, depending upon how it was measured, when it was measured, whether any extrapolation is involved .... etc.

Apologies, couldn't wait! Must....know....this....

It looks to me, this 55.325°E has an extra margin, taking into account the neighbours Gsat-8 and Gsat-16, that are station-kept in a rather erratic way.
Centered somewhere between 55.05° and 55.1°E ("accuracy"), but often exceeding the usual ± 0.1° box ("precision").

I got it now, right?
