That can't be the reason. SES have recently introduced extra capacity at 28.2ºE with the Astra 1N bird ensuring that backup at that location is not a problem.Analoguesat said:Backup - if the 28E bird fails they lose the transmitter network feed

Analoguesat said:What happens if a big solar flare zaps all the 28E birds - they are only a few dozen miles apart. Spread the tx feeds out around the arc and you spread the risk of losing all of them to a catastrophic event.
Theres also the fact that using 27.5W speads the transmitter feeds out over two operating companies. In the unlikely event of the Beeb & SES falling out SES cant hold them to ransom.
BBC transponder on 27.5W is for redundancy in its terrestrial distribution network, and nothing to do with the satellite DTH market.andrewcrawford said:95% of dishes are fixed
