When I said "i just noticed" I meant i read on KingOfSat... I was thinking maybe they went fta to replace 1N with its "large" footprint. :D
 
27.5W feeds the transmitter network. They go fta for a couple of days once a year or so.

Some of the expats get very excited

Apparently our turn down here for gale force 10 this week. Clear sky to 27.5W for me, now if said gale would just take the top off of neighbour's Cordyline, I could see past 53E. Or maybe wait for it to succumb to another deep freeze this winter, it almost done for it last time :-laugh

Given the BBCs desperation to save money, why don't they just feed the transmitters from the DTH feeds at 28.2ºE and switch off the dedicated feeds?

Backup - if the 28E bird fails they lose the transmitter network feed

hello, back in 1986 on 27.5 west bbc and sky was analog on this satellite.
then in 1988 they went on 19 east and they bought british satellite broadcasting

That can't be the reason. SES have recently introduced extra capacity at 28.2ºE with the Astra 1N bird ensuring that backup at that location is not a problem.

i think it more a backup in the form that if the bird oes off it doesnt mean 1n assume it was 2a went offlien would instally feed it it probally takea few hours and bbc probally wants backups so if it feed 24/7 even in failure, as it probally for other things overseas not people liek oyu and me more like big companies

What happens if a big solar flare zaps all the 28E birds - they are only a few dozen miles apart. Spread the tx feeds out around the arc and you spread the risk of losing all of them to a catastrophic event.


Theres also the fact that using 27.5W speads the transmitter feeds out over two operating companies. In the unlikely event of the Beeb & SES falling out SES cant hold them to ransom.
 
Indeed.

Redundancy and Diversity are the cornerstones of maintaining any "essential" service.

al;though i know why they do it i have ot wonder because if say the full 28.2e went dead for some reason then the ones who are looking for bbc wont get it because i say 95% of dishes are fixed there and most peopel lose the channels so in a way it pointless but i know the ocmerical reason behind it
 
All the satellite operators have contingency plans for all sorts of disasters. Look at what happened when W2 suddenly went silent a couple of years ago - Eutelsat had a reasonable number of services back up and running within a few days.

The chances of an operator losing three or four birds simultaneously are so remote as to be almost zero, but the emergency plans will be there just in case - and reviewed regularly.

BBC transponder on 27.5W is for redundancy in its terrestrial distribution network, and nothing to do with the satellite DTH market.

The table in the picture says Vertical. 11730 is within the range of the Astra 2A:

EB1 - TSD12 - 11662H
2A - TS1 - 11720H
2A - TS2 - 11740V
2A - TS3 - 11758H
etc.

It's probably the side lobe of 11740V or interference with a neighbouring satellite (for example the BADR at 26.0° East) ;)

hello,
does anyone know the tv 5 uk what frequency they are on.
i know the one on 1n and we can not get the astra 2d to it is grouped somewhere else.
unless they shut off that one.
