this all well and good in forty in years time the skies above us will be one big junk yard

On the other hand, one hopes that there will, by then, be the technology, the dosh and the will to develop a Space "Litter Pick" vehicle.

Does anyone know the frequency plan of Astra 1N? in particular,is the low band 10,70-10,95 covered?(the same used by Astra 2D).

With 55 tp's she'll cover virtually all the operational frequencies.

BTW - atm SES seem to be indication 1N will be going too 19E not 28E. If so the UK will have to wait until one of the new Astra 2's is orbited in 2012

if so both Astra 2D and 2A will be pushed to their limit,as the first of new Astra 2s is only scheduled in two years time. but yes as the Astra 1n footprint has been removed SES might have changed their mind sending it to 19E.(although some Freesat people said they expected a new spot beam satellite this year)

Ive had confirmation from SES Astra that Astra 1N will indeed be going to 28E after launch to operate for the UK.

I asked them on their Facebook page :-WooHoo

Thanks for your question. In the long-term, Astra 1N is to operate at 19.2, but at first, there is an interim mission at 28.2. I hope, this is answering your question. Christopher.

Interresting! So it seems that Astra 1H will still be positioned at 19.2° until 2012-2014 and then when Astra 2F and 2E have started end 2012/beginning 2013 Astra 1N will replace 1H at 19,2?

Would make sense when looking at that:

According to Wikipedia Astra 1H's (guaranteed) lifespan ends theoretically 2014.

SES Astra: I talked to Markus at our Satellite Monitor last week in order to answer Ross' question as we wanted to reply as soon as possible. What I can imagine is that Xenon (and Markus) meant the long-term plan. But anyway, thanks for the hint. It is an interesting discussion to follow. Christopher

At the latest end of may we'll see who was right ;)

Not really a problem - most of the satellites are lasting far longer than their theoretical lifespan. The critical factor is how much on-board station keeping fuel they have left. As Astra 1H hasnt been whizzing backwards and forwards along the arc during her lifetime chances are there is a reasonable amount of fuel left.

*If* one of the 19E birds was to start failing or degrading fast then Im certain Astra 1N would be deployed to 19E instead of 28E - simply because 19E is a far more important slot to SES.

To be honest Im surprised we have got as much out of SES as we have done - they are notoriously secretive about their satellites :D

Im hoping 1N will get a year at 28E until 2F is launched but if theres a change in plan by the operational team Im not going to worry about it. :D
