When this info was originally posted the SES site definitely said that 1N was going to 28E to begin with. However the SES site has changed since then so its anyones guess as to whats going where.

By my reckoning looking at the frequency ranges some of the birds transmit in Astra 1E is a possibility for 28E when shes released from 23.5E in a few weeks time

If I were in charge of the SES fleet the first thing I'd want replaced at 28.2ºE would be EB1. It doesn't make sense to have a satellite 0.3º offset and 8º difference in skew. If they were in command of it it could be configured the same as the others.

Yes, it's a shame there isn't more co-operation between Eutelsat and SES.

Yes, it will be switched off when that satellite is replaced (at some time between now and 2014).

Maybe it is time to solve the problem using politics and demand the EU intervene on the way programme rights are sold and viewing is restricted within the EU.

Can anyone suggest suitable wording for a petition?

I do believe this removal of tv from european residents is in breach of EU policy - borderless viewing in your chosen language. Why doesnt Sky put up a sat to cover Iberian peninsula and make even more wads of dosh!!

I believe that most European Broadcasters have always been in breach of the EU 'Open Skies' Policy but no serious attempt to press for compliance has ever been made.Political pressure through European MP,s is probably the only route to protest the envisaged the further restriction of 28E coverage and I would have thought that there are Ex-pat holiday makers and second home owners with sufficient muscle to apply it.As I understand it, it is a commercial broadcasting rights issue that demands restricted coverage of SKY programs ,rather than national policy. This makes it much more difficult change. BBC coverage is also however officially restricted by the terms of its licence to broadcast, issued by the UK government .To date technology has made it impossible to comply fully, but clearly this is being overcome .A further restriction on the freedom of individuals ,one might say.

:-Nooo

It is needed in Europe, we should have Open broadcasting, the problem is that the English language would win and the French would not like that at all. I speak as one who live in FRANCE and loves every minute of it.

Please come back.

Further to my earlier comment,my understanding is that commercial broadcasts should be restricted both in territory covered and in language . This authorises broadcasters in the UK for example to emit all transmissions in the English language ,but seeks legally to restrict coverage to the UK .Thus the situation that currently exists, where, due to technology, it has so far been impossible for Sky to comply contractually with territorial limitations .This has the effect that Sky broadcasts of American programmes for example are receivable over a large area of Europe ,which could potentially damage the commercial interests of foreign broadcasters, since it is not illegal for citizens of other european countries to receive Sky broadcasts provided that that they have a legal Sky card for encrypted programs. It is in an attempt to be commercially compliant that Sky restricts sales of its cards to UK residents only .If Sky is licensed to transmit programmes to another country they must basically employ the language of the country involved [eg Sky Italy].Thus 'davlynsun's' proposal would not solve the problem of the reception of Sky UK broadcasts in Spain, and unless changes are made to the rules the situation can only get worse as technology increases the ability to restrict broadcast coverage .Similarly the BBC will continue to attempt to limit its coverage.

Hi Stewpot 47 It is not only the French who would't like it.It affects the commercial rights of all foreign broadcasters, particularly those who broadcast English language programs sourced in America ,uk or wherever. The eventual outcome of coverage restrictions is to prevent the reception of all uk transmissions intended for uk consumption only overseas

If 1N is going somewhere else, then nothing.

I am confused:
Is 1N going to replace the good old 1H on 19.2 or first moving to 28e?

According to __http://www.ses.com/ses/siteSections/services/satellitefleet/upcoming-launches/index.php its only 19.2!

Will people then still be able to receive 19.2 with a 1.8 meter dish here in middle east or will it be as worse as Astra 1kr/1L/1M Crap?

Yes, they updated that page shortly after this thread was created. Maybe putting 1N at 28.2E on that page was a mistake and someone noticed and corrected it to 19.2E. Or maybe someone was giving away too much info and it might still be going to 28.2E temporarily but it hasn't been formally announced yet. Who knows.

The hardware is an EADS Astrium E3000, same as Astra 1M, so it is likely the generic performance will be similar.

Maybe Astrium will surprise us again with a Widebeam or even a pan-european beam that reaches into middle-east à la 1M or 3B?
They should have done this long ago, because legally the German Channels have broadcasting licences for all Europe, and as we know, Cyprus belongs to europe ;D

Only time will tell !

From joinfreesat - a QandA with Emma Scott...is 1N back to 28east then....or another...

Q: Is narrow-beam capacity the biggest hurdle to additional channels on freesat, HD or otherwise? What steps are Ofcom, Freesat (BBC/ITV), Astra (SES) and Sky taking to ensure that narrow-beam capacity is prioritised for FTA channels?
A: It’s not an issue as there is still capacity available and moving forward there will be more capacity when Astra launches an additional satellite next year.

is anything from Astra 3B broadcasting from the spot beam yet? it can be useful to see how this E3000 satellite works outside the official footprint, the same hardware as the new sats planned for 28.2
