BBC and ITV in Tripoli, Libya

My Satellite Setup
2.5 dish and Sky Digital panasonic receiver
My Location
Tripoli, Libya
I am currently watching sky digital in Benghazi Libya. I have 2.4 dish, .3db LNB and panasonic TU-DSB30 receiver. I get most of the SKY channels but not BBC 1, 2, ITV, etc.

I will be relocating to Tripoli, Libya which is more in the ASTRA footprint than Benghazi and will use my existing receiver but will be buying new dish and LNB. What size dish/LNB would you recommend which would be best to receive BBC, ITV, etc.

Thanks in advance,

Stewart Coulter

Have moved this post from Site access and membership problems, please think about where you post and use a relevant section, plus it is best to make the thread subject indicative of the content, Mr Stewart Coulter as a title really doesn't give anyone a clue as to the information you require.

Unfortunately I don't think we have any members who currently receive Astra 2D (BBC and ITV Channels) from that area, or even Tunisia, which is further North and West. From looking at the 2D footprint, you will certainly require a dish in excess of 3.5 metres diameter, I don't think the move from Benghazi will make too much difference to reception.

Yup - well over 3m required in Tripoli. Heres the nearest info from the Astra2d.com website. (Its for Algeria but there are no closer reports!)

Algeria
Confirmed dish size for Astra 2D in Algeria is, 3.0m and up
Confirmed report from Hassi Messouad in Eastern Algeria, roughly 200 Km from Tunisia's widest point with a 3.0m dish.

I doubt if anybody can help you since Astra 2D shows much difference in reception even on small distances. For example in Eastern Sicily somebody has been struggling with 3.8m, on Laganas (Zakynthos) i read about this in a greek board: H partly with 3m, full H with 4.8m, full H+V with 5-5.5m. These are the nearest reports i have so only somebody from Tripoli can tell. If you find out please let us know.

I moved to Tripoli Libya in Feb 09, so just getting sorted. Local knowledge among the ex-pat community here in Regata Tripoli is, when you leave the UK, you bring your sky box out with you and you need a 3.5M dish, but I have heard some people say they can get ITV and BBC, and others say not.

I am in a temporary appartment for the next couple of weeks, but when my wife joins me, we will get our permenant house, so then I will be buying a 3.5m + motorised dish, so will keep the site updated if anyone is interested ?
Cheers
Geoff

Of course i'm interested Geoff not only in Astra 2D but in all receivable satellites in Libya as well. Reports are very rare from there for non-arabic reading people. A couple of years ago there was somebody from Southern Libya in another board that received Astra 2A/B quite ok on 2.40m but unfortunately i lost this contact.

But 3.5m sound extremely small for 2D even for Northwestern Libya but who knows, might be another sidelobe i'm not aware of. Hope that this information you got is correct.

Best regards.
