The visual style derives from the drawings by Stanislav Lolek, whose Twenties newspaper strip inspired the composer, and a new interpretation of the music is performed by the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester. 9.20pm Attenborough in Paradise The eminent naturalist visits the jungle of New Guinea, where he realises a lifelong ambition by filming the colourful plumage of the island's birds of paradise. To achieve his aim he climbs ropes to the top of towering trees and suffers the discomfort of mosquito-filled hides — but it all pays off in the end

10.20pm Wildlife Special Film-maker Gavin Thurston treks deep into the Congo rainforest on the trail of the creatures that inspired the story of King Kong, in an attempt to dispel the myth behind their image as ferocious beasts. With the benefit of 20 years' experience, he reveals the dangers involved in studying wildlife in its natural environment, but eventually sees his first silverback gorilla, which leads the way to thousands more, making the journey worthwhile
