Just finished watching Belleville Rendezvous which came free with The Times today - in fact it was the reason I bought the paper. I first watched it about 2 years ago the BBC and it was just as enjoyable this time round.

What a marvellously bizarre film. Some really great ideas (frogs legs anyone?), wonderfully acute drawings (all the fat Americans, the diminutive Mafia bosses) and a storyline that defies belief!

I can't think of anything else that combines cycling, kidnapping, illegal betting and the Mafia! All wrapped up in one man's obsession for the Tour de France (although renamed here).

I hadn't realised that the Beeb had a hand in its production until I saw their their name in the credits. I think they deserve congratulating for their nerve and forsight.

You can probably tell a little bit about me from the fact that I enjoyed it so much.

Yeah I saw that in the paper, went in the draw with the hundreds of other freebie discs. Might rake it out if it's worth a look.

The Devil????

Er,no. He's not in.

Subtitled, no. But then it's a virtually dialogueless film. Most of the French is there just as audio wallpaper and there even some English at the beginning and end of the film.

BTW, did I say that it's a cartoon? Alhough I think tat it doesn't do the film justice in the same way as some of the best Japanese Manga are also "just" cartoons.

One of the few films I conemplated walking out of the cinema on after 20 minutes.
Repetitive in the extreme, the animators were not at fault, the editing suite went into overdrive when it was found there were not enough 'seconds' in the can, possibly due to poor management over the budget.

About the only redeeming feature was the dog and his dream, but it was not enough to save this rancid turkey.

Seems curiously DIFFERENT.

IMDB: "When her grandson is kidnapped during the Tour de France, Madame Souza and her beloved pooch Bruno team up with the Belleville Sisters--an aged song-and-dance team from the days of Fred Astaire, to rescue him.

It's certainly not your normal run-of-the-mill punch-up movie. One that needs a little attention to get the best out of it.

I still maintain that it's a cracking film!

When any of the Pee wee Herman films are given out for free - then I will be impressed - with The Times, that is ...:D

Of course, when you buy a UK paper here (Berlin) - you never see any of these freebies  In fact, you're lucky to get a colour paper as standard. Bastards!
