Hi Folks,

I have a elderly friend who wants me to get him a good general purpose satellite receiver to stick on the end of his satellite dish. It needs to be reasonably easy to use and update the channels....Anyone out there any thoughts at what i should look for as i have been away from the satellite scene for a little while.
Thanks :):):)

The Technomate TM-5402 (M3) is a popular choice.

More info needed, methinks:

Is the dish fixed, multi-LNB, or Motorised?

If fixed, to which Satellite?

Does he need PVR features?

(Starters for ten!)

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
Another few to add to the three above (all of which the TM 5402 M3 can do, and the cost of one of those is around £100 new):

What sorts of channels, and from which countries, do you think he would be interested in receiving?

Will a single tuner Rx be OK, or would he need a dual tuner unit so he can watch one channel whilst recording another?

What size is the existing dish?

Is he in a position to add extra LNBs & a DiSEqC switch to that dish if it is fixed &/or to get it motorised if it is not (as I suspect)?

What would be the rough price range/limit? (you can also pick up one of those TMs for £30-£40 s/h on ebay)

How likely do you think he would be to want to have an "expandable" system in the future?

Would Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) via his broadband connection (assuming he has one) be interesting / necessary?

Motorised 1mtre ear to ear line of sight in middle England , no pvr needed, no internet channels needed, no future proofing needed, not bothered about price range within reason, single tuner would be fine, he wants umpapa umpapa channels (bavarian type music ) amounst other things but he generally has a lot of time on his hands and so wants lots of stations to peruse . I note the TM5402HD M3 has been out for quite a while now and the Technomate forum seems dead...is the M3 still worth buyimg??i see the software hasnt been updated on it since 2014......are they still supporting it ?
Phew !!

The Octagon SX88 is a remarkable receiver excellent video in HD & SD very easy to set up with Multi-Stream.
OCTAGON SX88 H.265 HEVC HD

The M3 has a very poor picture quality in SD & no updates now so time to move onto something that is supported like the SX88.

Yes why not buy an out of date receiver that the manufacturer no longer supports with updates (and hasn't for a couple of years.

Absolutely - anyone is entitled to offer, and anyone is entitled to buy, anything (legal!) if they decide to. You may want the "latest and greatest" for many reasons, but YOU still have to make the decision -and you can't blame anyone else if you make the "wrong" decision unless you can prove that you have been deliberately mislead by the seller!

On what basis? Was it sold to you as the latest model?
Your own post above states that it suits your needs and is easy to use.

Do you not also wish to complain about your recently purchased "outdated" mobile phone?

Thanks for all the advice folks .

I'm gonna get them a Technomate TM5402HD Mk 3 i think. I know its a bit outdated now , but it will do what he is asking for and having had one of those myself in the past, i'm reasonably competent at driving it.( oh and its cheap too ) and so be able to cope with explaining it to him and dealing with comebacks.
Williams comment on the Octogon SX88 and the link comments have made me decide to order one for myself to play around with.

Thanks again guys,
