Hi all,

Having spent a few years on cable TV we have moved and have decided to go to freesat. I have just bought myself an amiko mini hd combo but I am a little disappointed. The EPG is very poor and the menu is rubbish and I was wondering if anyone has any advice on buying a new receiver. I am obviously keen to get a receiver with a easy to use menu and EPG. I also didnt do my research and didnt realise it wasnt linux based so that is something else I am looking at. I am happy to pay for a quality receiver.

Thanks

Tom

Well, if you want a Linux receiver, then something like Vu+ Solo2 will work fine. If you install OpenVIX image on it (or get World-of-Sat to do it for you if you buy it off them), the Freesat EPG will work out of the box.

However, if you want to use the receiver just for Freesat and nothing else then you might be better off getting a dedicated Freesat receiver, such as a Humax, which are highly regarded.

I think you've been caught in the trap of thinking that Freesat and FTA (free to air) are the same - they're not.

An FTA transmission is just that. It can be received on any FTA receiver, which is what Linux boxes basically are. There is basic Now-and-Next information on each channel which is probably what you have seen. Freesat uses the FTA channels but has a seperately transmitted EPG to overlay the information you're looking for. A certified Freesat box will just do this out of the, er, box. Linux boxes can be persuaded to do this (and much more) by adding plugins and the like but if you want the simple life then a Freesat box is the way to go.

BTW, don't confuse Freesat with the deliberately badly named Freesat-from-$ly that is available from $ly. Frankly it's best avaoided and, fortunately, is becoming less and less common.

I would use a vu duo or similar (enigma2) with cross epg.

I have been using it since telling Sky where to stick it.

And had no problems at all.

Yeh I'm looking at FTA. Can I use cross epg with the amiko box or do i need to upgrade to a linux receiver? my budget is £100-150 perhaps

A Technomate TM-Nano-2T same spec as the Vu Solo2 but at around £169 twin tuner and runs a Dual core 1300mhz processor, Fa r better than a Vu Duo

has any one got a Zgemma Star single or twin tuner satellite reciever???
some one told me about this reciever saying that you can get sky skin so the menu
looks like sky also got EPG...

Mate you can get the "$ky skin" on any enigma 2 receiver really, most teams have it on their plugins streams.
