Best way to run sat cable?

I am installing a motorised dish in the back garden, I have several options for running cable but which is best.

1 - Go up the garden up the back wall and throw the cable right over the roof and down the front of the house and in through the front wall.

2 - Up the back wall and in under the roof tiles and down the aerial tube straight into the living room

3 - Go right round the back, round the side, round the front and in.

Which is best?

I would guess the second one, do you mean that there is an aerial cable conduit from the loft down to the living room?

and while your doing that run some twin satellite cable in case you want to add another receiver or whatever in the future.

Yes thats the job, but how do I get into the loft, is there a special way of achieving this?

I already have a Sky dish up with shotgun cable so that should be all I need

I would normally go up through the soffit, but if that's not possible, then behind the gutter and under a roof tile.

You are speaking to a plonker here So If I drill up through the soffit is that me straight in the loft then?

You will have to go up into the loft and take a peek, not all soffits lead to loft space.

If the windows are close to the soffit, then there is a chance the rooms go into the loft, meaning a horrible reach to catch the cable. Shallow rooves also mean a devil to pull the stuff into the loft.

If you dont mind heights and your ladder can reach just above the gutter, then follow Rolfs advice and slip the cable under the gutter and in through the tiling. You may have to break into any membrane or knock a small hole into any wooden panelling behind them though.

If you are going to drill the soffit be careful. This might seem obvious but :-

Just last week we all had a fantastic laugh when a sparks apprentice was drilling cable entries. Taking the same bit he had used on the walls (1m for old random stone walls) proceeded to drill a hole in the soffit for a security light cable.

Unfortunatley the lads drill control was not the best and he sent the drill through the soffit and clean out of the roof ! The sight of half a meter of drill bit sticking out of the roof was quite funny. The spark wasn't happy though as he had to fix the roof.
