Why do they keep building these things on top of volcanoes??? Dormant hummmmmmmm that means that some day it will go POP. There goes the neighborhood.

A telescope only has to work for a decade, technology assists redundancy.
The only issue is the natives worshipping the 'location' and seeing another building appear on the horizon, but really if the scientists pooled the resources, they could easily demolish five of the older ones to appease the god(s)

The only thing the appeases Pele is a bottle of gin thrown into an active lava flow or a virgin sacrificed at midnight on the 28th of March at 11:59 PM.
