Black screen for Fox Life?
Fox Life, a subsidiary of Fox International Channels, has lost its lawsuit against CanalSat and could disappear from the French TV landscape by the end of this year.
Last week, the Paris Court of Appeal gave credit to digital platform CanalSat in its decision not to renew Fox Life’s contract that ended last April. The decision confirmed that French theme channels didn’t benefit from any automatical right to renewal of carriage contracts.
Fox Life’s continuation is now in question, as CanalSat distribution represented 85% of its €12 million annual revenues. But Fox International has not finished with CanalSat, as another subsidiary is also fighting against CanalSat. Since the merger with TPS and the end of competition, CanalSat is re-evaluating its payments to channels. The announced decrease in travel channel Voyage’s remuneration would lead to a 80% cut in revenues between now and 2009. The case is being arbitrated by CSA.
