My Satellite Setup
I have a Samsung 40" lcd tv, a Samsung dvd recorder and a sky satellite system
My Location

Hi All hope you can help me with this problem. I have a Sky+ HD box connected to a Samsung TV through an HDMI cable, also a dvd player connected via a scart. All has been well until yesterday when I switched the system on I can now only get a black & white picture through the HDMI cable, I am now watching through the scart and get a colour picture. I have re-booted the sky box, I have disconnected all the cables and re-connected them, I have changed the HDMI cable with one that is working fine on another TV.
I don't know what else to try but thought I would ask all you knowlegable members before I ring Sky.

regards

Janet

Well there have been reports in the past of this happening and the common link appears to be the Samsung TV, but I have been unable to unearth a common cause.

Do you have any other HDMI capable kit, like a Games machine, that you can prove/disprove the TV/HDMI connection?

Hi Tivu

Just connected my dvd player/recorder to tv via HDMI and it is black & white, connected via scart and got colour. So it looks like it is my TV, any ideas for a quick fix?

I'm sorry, but no.

I just recalled there have been problems with Samsung Tellies: All I can suggest is you ring their UK Helpline.

Is the Telly under Warranty?

Hi Tivu

Unfortunately no warranty as the tv is now 2 years old but thanks for your help, I will ring the helpline see how I get on.

Ok, best of luck. You never know if some goodwill might be given towards any repairs, it being a known fault.

Hi again, No luck with Samsung customer care, they ran me through a reset to no avail so have now put me in touch with a service centre in Manchester. Just hope its not going to be too expensive to fix. Thanks for your help.

I suggest you do belt and braces then, beforelashing out any readies.

If you have cooperative friends/neighbours, maybe try your Sky box on their TV via HDMI and also borrow yet another HDMI equipped bit of external kit to try on yourt TV.

Does the TV only have one HDMI connection, or two?

Hi again, just thought I would let you know that I have now had the sky box hooked up to another Tv through HDMI and got colour so it is definitely the Samsung TV. Not having much look with a repair as now I've spoken to 2 repair people and both say they have never heard of this problem and are very unsure how to fix it, "I can't believe it"., anyway thanks for all your help.
Off now to search for a new TV.

Have you checked menu settings? Some LCDs allow different settings for different profiles. Maybe worth another look. You may already have done this but just a thought. Good luck

How odd that Repairers are stumped.

At least you haven't wasted money on fruitless repairs.

I concur with the previous Post re checking TV Menu settings before giving up completely.

Two things I would do.

First, go to
_http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/troubleshootingguides/supportTroubleShootingGuidesMain.do
and type in your model number to see if there's anything in the troubleshooting guide about this.

Second, go to
_http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/download/supportDownloadMain.do
and see if you can download a newer version of the software in your TV. Again, this might have been fixed by an upgrade.

Great stuff. Let's hope it bears fruit.

Hi PaulR, thanks for responding, I have just tried your suggestion but unfortunately my Model Number, LE40 R8, is not listed. Just also checked the settings but nothing there either. It seems I've hit a brick wall but thanks for trying.

Hi, Yes have checked all settings to no avail but thanks anyway.

I've just checked the Samsung site and that's an incomplete model number. It's also correct format without the space. Thus:

LE40R81B, LE40R81BH, LE40R81W, etc. There are twelve variations!

This might get a better response.

hI PaulR, Just re-checked the model number and it is LE40R88BD, so checked again and no software upgrades available but thanks for all your help.

Yes, I've checked as well. Not much help there.

Good find ............... let's hope that applies here. I found references to the symptom, but not the cause. Your search skills are on top form!
