Today i spent some hours doing an experiment of putting a slimline blu-ray drive into a dreambox 8000. The blu-ray drive in which i have is a Panasonic UJ-220 and writes all of BD-RE/DVD-RW/CD-RW. This drive is an IDE drive and so you will need an IDE to SATA converter in order to run it (the Dreambox 8000 manual shows this adapter in the screenshots and they claim the adapter and 6 screws for it come with the box but this is not true, you will need to buy it deperate). The hardest part was getting the screws back in haha. The drive is about £100 or for less (if you shop around) and the adapter is about £10, brigning the total price to around £110 which is a bargain. A friend of mine bought this same drive on a famous auction site for about £90 brand new.
the blu-ray re-writer drive was fitted and the DVD functionallity of the re-writer works a charm. So far all i have done is inserted a DVD and played a movie as i have no spare blank disks to check out the DVD burn function.
This drive was tested on a Dreambox 8000 with Nabilosat Blackhole 0.12 image.
One thing i did notice was that in the deivce manager, the drive came up as a MATSHITA (yes that spelling is correct) and it says BD (a blu-ray drive), so the Dreambox must have the drivers to recognise normal DVD and Blu-ray drives.
Attached are pictures showing the drive working. The picture of the drive inside the box was taken on a mobile phone so it's not all that clear, however you can just make out the blu-ray symbol on the front of the drive in the bottom right corner.
This is good news for Dreambox owners as it now means that if you chose to buy a re-writer for your box then you can buy a blu-ray one and not need to change it when the blu-ray is supported.
