Hello all. This is a treasure of a list, especially if like me you're lurking and learning!

Anyone watching SKY in Athens care to give me some pointers ? dish size, receiver (which one, from where), suggest a supplier, other problems/issues, quality ... ...

If you want the BBC/ITV channels on Astra 2D then you are going to need a huge dish - probably something around 3m.
 
I'm shooting for ASTRA 2A & 2B and a payed SKY subscription. I'd like feedback from anyone who's been there, done that, on dish sizes, quality of picture, receiver info and how the whole thing can be arranged.

I'm in Athens - AFAIK you would a need a 3.5m dish for 24/7 Sky UK. A slingbox might be a more viable solution. _http://www.satleo.gr can put you in touch with companies in Athens doing 3.5m installations (I think there is only one though), but it helps if you speak Greek...
 
Hi, 1.2m is okay for all day in good weather but can get dropout in cloud around evening (Kifisia/Agios Stefanos). I'm east of the new airport (Loutsa) and use a 1.7m dish and lose the signal only in the most extreme weather. As the electric usually goes off first in these conditions, I would recommend anti-surge and anti-spike protection for your telephone, computer and digibox supplies! I've measured the mains several times and it is not unusual to see only 180V.

For 2D in Athens you need something larger than 5 meters. So far I don't know anyone who receives 2D in Athens. For 24/7 reception of 2A, 2B, Eurobird (fixed & steerable) you will need something around 1.8m. With my 1.4 I am losing Eurobird's fixed.

Just getting back to the my original thread and posting my system:
The setup is : 1.5m x 1.3m noname metal dish, ground pole, 0,2db Maximum LNB, PACE 2600, 70m good quality cable from dish to digibox, inline amplifier at the beggining of the 70m cable run.
The results are: 24x7 ASTRA 2A, 2B, EUROBIRD1 and of course absolutely nothing from 2D. Very stable, very pleased.
I've put my pin in the dish survey!
Nowthen, does anyone know of 3.0m dishes going cheap ???

Yes all of 2A,2B and EUROBIRD. One of the EUROBIRD beams was the trickiest and would break up at times. Eventually I moved the dish a fraction to the East, actually moving away from the strongest signal position (according to my 12€ satfinder). I'm guessing the 2A or 2B signals are stronger and that guides you to set up for 28.2 and not 28.5 ???!
 
U deserve a big bravo m8 as it seems that you have done a brilliant job in seting up your dish. In my case Eurobird has proved to be very very tricky and I am losing quite a lot (like cnbc, motors and other), although I have a 1.4 dish here in Athens.
 
Well, we do seem to have different setups and that's obviously what makes the difference. I think part of the success is beginner's luck !! I get m&m and C4, Five, Five US, Five life etc etc but I don't remember watching cnbc. I did actually think I'd be able to watch Eurosport UK with my freesat card but I can't. Of course the total lack of ASTRA 2D is now even MORE aparent ... so if you hear of any 3.0m dishes going cheap let me know ... :))
 
There is no way to receive Astra 2D in Athens with anything less than 5 meters. And I am telling you that for sure mate.
 
You're probably right. However in one of the Greek SAT mags I recently read a report of 24x7 2D in Kerkyra with 2.7m, I'll try and find it.

Perhaps there are 3.0m dishes for hire !?!? ...
 
That is correct. You can receive 2D in Corfu (Kerkyra) with a 2.7m, however as you know Corfu is on the west and thus it benefits from stronger signals.
