I am still using a dial-up (£9.99, 24/7, per month), because having been to the library, I cannot see any difference between dail-up and broadband, because I don't make many downloads...and the changing of Internet pages are still as swift with dial-up as broadband.

Anyway, last month, a virus attached itself to my dial-up which pre-fixed the dail-up number with a very expensive £5.50 per minute charge. Since I check my BT bill at least 10 times per day on the freephone number, I suddenly realised that I had a virus which cost me £22.59p for just over 15 minutes online.

BT kindly deducted the £22.59, and put me on this anti preminum rate device, which stops any expensive numbers being pre-fixed before the dial-up number, and it also stops preminum numbers being dialed on the telephone.

But, but, but, is it full proof???

It cant have been dialing a uk based number. IIRC our highest rates are £1-50 a minute.

Yes, those diallers are bad, at least you noticed it quickly, and got a refund!

The ban should work, all premium numbers start with their own prefix (I believe 09, but I'm not sure if that's all of them) anyway if those are blocked on your phone account then nothing should be able to dial them.

A bit like a phone account that doesn't allow international calls.

EDIT: Oh…well just hope they banned international premium numbers too then, maybe you should check that with the phone company Saturlight...

What I can't understand is how you have found dialup to be as fast as broadband for surfing, I dread having to use dialup when i am not at home, it is like watching paint dry. My pages on this forum load instantaneously, even the ones with loads of graphics, dialup won't allow that.

i too find it hard to believe that you dont see any difference between dial-up and broadband. One is space age the other is stone age!

Well, it's not "as quick", say dial-up on my pcs is around five seconds slower, but I'd rather have that than choosing a more expensive broadband. Just my opinion. Maybe my processor is fast, and I use Windows XP. I dunno.

Thanks to all the others who replied. It's certainly a trick dail-up members on here need to watch out for. ;)

Which is an excellent reason to go over to broadband - anyone on bb cannot be affected by diallers :D

One day, one day...:D

Isn't broadband from people like TalkTalk now as cheap as dialup?

I reckon so, as is Freeeserve/Wanadoo/Orange or whatever it's called today.

That are in 'SKY's' coverage area:D

.

Disclaimer, disclaimer, etc, etc.

Like a big hole...I'll look into it. :D Ta. ;)

saturdaylight,

that happened to me about 3 years ago, i ended up paying £100 more on my bill, i ended up getting my phone out, now i just use the mobile phone. Get them to put a block on anything more than a local call, i had that choice. i decided not to take it.

I have to admit that because of Hospital checkups I am not using the internet as much as I used to. But dialup!!!!!
Great heavens no, I don't think I would ever go back to that again.

Like rolf says 'It would be like watching paint dry'. Sorry Saturlight

I'm on dial-up in France at the moment and it's stultifyingly slow, so slow that I sometimes don't come online for several days at a time (4 days ago this time!) until I can be sure that I'll have enough time to tour the entire site.

At home in the UK it's only 512k BB but it's so much faster with pages loading noticeably quicker. With BB I can click on links and let them load in the background while I finish looking at whatever the main post is about.

If I could get BB out here at a reasonable price I would like a shot!

Make the change Saturlight, you won't regret it in the end.
