BT Vision to trial ad-supported VOD

BT Vision is to launch a pilot scheme which will allow viewers to watch selected films containing adverts from the service's online download store free of charge, according to a report in today's Guardian.

The technology used for the service, which was developed by Israeli firm Hiro Media, allows ads to be targeted according to viewers' location and the time of day and prevents viewers who are watching on PC from 'ad-skipping' by disabling their computer's fast-forward function for the duration of the adverts. Once downloaded, films can be viewed for 30 days and can be emailed to peers.

BT Vision's Interactive and Commercial Media Director, Antony Carbonari, told the paper that BT would rollout the advertising service beyond the online video store in 12 to 18 months if the three-month trial was a success, however the service would not completely replace BT Vision's paid-for VOD service.
