My Satellite Setup
none yet...
Hello,

I'm planning to get a system installed to watch Finnish language channels which according to another website are on 0.8°W Thor 6 (I guess that means where we point the satellite...) I've spoken to a company who told me I need a 1.2m dish which they can supply and install along with a decoder and that will definitely pick up the signal anywhere in the UK. However, they told me I'd need to source the Conax card myself.

Can someone point me in the direction where I can buy one myself or do I need to get someone in Finland to buy one for me and 'pretend' to be the subscriber? Is the Conax card just the standard one they will sell to normal people in Finland or is it some special thing? Sorry for what are probably silly questions but if I don't know... I prefer to ask!

Thanks for your help in advance :)

To be sure on the size of dish, whereabouts in the UK are you? There's a big difference between Penzance and Aberdeen!

In general, if you can get someone in the country whose TV you want to watch to get the card for you, that is the cheapest, and probably best, way of doing it. If they are family or friends then they probably won't even charge extra!

1.2m is a bit optimistic for Finnish TV in the southern part of the country. Where about are you in the UK.

If its one of the canal finish packages your best buying one of their recivers along with the card as that would be the easiest way to get your channels.

Ok, thanks... I'm on the south coast around Dorset so I guess that means 1.2m might not be enough?

Any reliable installers on the south coast that could be recommended to 'test' rather than the previous people that I spoke to about whom I'm now a little suspect?

If I understand correctly, you'd recommend getting someone to install the satellite (zero change of me doing it) but getting a decoder and card with a subscription package from Finland and just plugging those in (or, more likely, asking the installing engineer for the dish to do it for me to ensure it is set up correctly)? :)

I am in Bristol and Thor 6 is fine on my 85cm dish. Just some HD channels are hit and miss. I reckon a good 1m dish will be enough for 1W - it's not a hugely weak satellite in most of UK.
