Where is the redress for faulty goods if you buy from a company in administration?
While under administration you can still return it if faulty, only items purchased while under administration though! Anyone who purchased something under Maplin can only try with the manufacturer. Technically Maplin no long exist and the administrators are just clearing stock.
My local store are actually squatting! Their internet is off and they haven't paid rent.

Yeah it is technically 1080p but its over composite, it's an improved form of analogue technology they are using. But it won't get near an IP system sadly.
Maplin sell that type as its easier for people to upgrade an existing system if they have already run Coax.

World of Satellite have a Technomate system, that doesn't look too bad for the money and at least good support from them if needed.
Thanks

Had a look at the Technomate CCTV packages on WoS, and, as you say, they do look interesting, but I would still have several questions nevertheless:

1) The cameras are supplied with 20 m Ethernet PoE cables, but I think I have read that long PoE cable runs can result in very low supply voltages to the cameras, and thus poor/no connections.

2) I would also like see some 3rd party/customer reviews of the system - but currently there do not seem to be any.

3) I would also need a couple of narrower angle outdoor cameras to point down the garden (not just for "range", but also to avoid being accused of spying on the neighbours - especially the ones on the other side to the neighbours who would be fine with a CCTV system that covers their garden) but there seems nothing like that on the WoS site and so a suitable solution would have to be available from another supplier.

4) In my own experience (and also that of others IIRC) Technomate UK "tech support" for their products has a distressing tendency to be both "patchy at best" and typically quite "short-lived" - and so I would be worried about the medium-long term sustainability of such a TM system.

Another, and closer, look at the TM CCTV spec states that the resolution seems to be "Resolution: PAL: CIF (352 x 288), D1(4CIF) (704 x 576); NTSC: CIF (352 x 240), D1(4CIF) (704 x 480)". That doesn't look particularly "high" - and so are all PoE cameras that "poor"?

Sorry just got home from a lecture/talk on 10GHz at an event in Carmarthen today, so just seen your messages.

I wouldn't worry about distance, most kits come with 50m per camera which should be more than enough for a residential dwelling and true PoE isn't direct power it is a AC frequency passed down ethernet cable and then converted in to DC, it can travel very far.

Where did you see those specs? the cameras are 2MP so will be 1080p, have you got a link?

This is a screenshot of my Dahua System with 2MP cams...

Interesting customer reviews of the TM kit on Amazon - especially the one from "canada" in Nov 2016 which has a lot of useful advice and "user experiences"!

Several reviewers were very disparaging about TM "Tech Support" - which does not surprise me at all!

Maplins - the predicted Friday further price drops at Maplins. No apparent changes to the CCTV stuff, but some of the new component prices might be of interest to someone.

It's evident why they went down the pan, even with these discounts they are still not competitive!
No luck so far with finding a CCTV, the other option is to buy the bits separately?

@RustySpoons

Sorry I didn't reply earlier to the post above but I've had a lot of other things to deal with this week.

Those shots look pretty good, but one thing does continue to confuse the hell out of me: where can I find a comparison of the picture definitions of the various types of analogue and network digital cameras?

That's okay, I wasn't expecting a reply :)
It's a minefield out there! its not just daytime quality either, you need to see if they can handle motion and low light.
And photos of monitors displaying camera images do not help, have a look on Youtube and there are some good CCTV forums, Ipcamtalk is one I use.

Id honestly avoid analogue, they are not great, just easier to install if you already have coax runs.

Thanks

I'll take a look at that forum and any others I can find (and obviously no existing coax cables for CCTV).

There is already a very long CCTV thread on the forum, although it's been dormant for quite a long time, and that's where I originally posted the same question about the Lorex system from Maplins - but no-one replied.

I've now reread all 20 (!) pages of that thread to remind myself of what others (and myself on occasions) said at the time, but that didn't really address the question about camera picture formats - and still left me in a quandary as to whether to use a digital system.

BTW to any Staff reading the current thread: I think a lot of it about CCTV could usefully be moved to the dedicated CCTV thread in order to update that and to keep relevant posts in just one place.

PS: been doing some "research" on cameras and systems since I posted earlier afternoon -> VERY interesting, and so I now see where you are coming from! :D

Almost all of those folding trolleys have a very well-reported "fatal flaw" - the wheels "tuck under", and sometime actually break, very easily under load (has happened to me many times!)

Having had that happen too many times, see my July 2017 Review of the last one I bought from Amazon to see how I fixed it - since then it has been fine on a number of days out carrying 2x large folding chairs and other stuff! :D.
PS: couldn't mention it on Amazon, but you can get all the required materials from Screwfix!
