My home town has the unenviable distinction of being the worst example in a list of 117 UK towns and cities surveyed for their diversity of shopping outlets (chain stores, independent shops etc.)
An example is the historic shopping thoroughfare of Petit Cury, of which I was once very fond of for its excellent choice of local friendly shops. Of over 50 outlets, all but one are now big name chain multiples - fashion, mobile phones, fast food, shoes, coffee shops etc.
Much of the blame can be put on the University landlords. They charge huge rents that only the large chains are able to afford.
