A question on redundancy and future use.

I'm looking at two cameras sitting here with various lenses, taking up more space than they should.

The Canon SLR camera was a purchase a short while ago, simply because it came with a Canon 70-210 lens which - on paper - than the one for the DSLR, which is a Tamron 70-300. I also have the original 18-55 lens that is OK, but nothing special.

The DSLR, a Rebel XT (EOS 350D) with 8MP sensor is old but performs flawlessly, the only thing it cannot do is take movies, which is where the iPod comes in to its own.

So I have a Canon EOS650 doing nothing but collect dust and a spare lens. Is it something of no interest these days, or is there still a small market for mid-range cameras using 35mm film ?

I think the biggest challenge is how to get the 35mm film developed?
In my location we don't have any shops doing the development, but I think there are shops in other parts of the world who would do it for a price.

Agreed, there are some still around in London though (and I expect many darkrooms exist in the land of the older 'amateur')

Our local camera shop has one of the two front windows half full of SLR shells, though I have not checked pricing, nor know how many they shift each month.

Anyone here still use 35mm film ?

And are Canon EFS lenses actually better than the equivalent Tamron, or others ?

There is still a small market for these cameras and 35mm lenses. The EOS650 body alone sells for £20 to £40 on ebay.

A quick Google reveals quite a few developers and printers of 35mm (and 120) film in the UK at reasonable prices.

I use a digital camera nowadays but have a collection of over 50 film cameras from the 40's onwards mostly 35mm and most fully working. I even have some film stored in the fridge. I used to develop my own B&W and colour slide film and print my own B&W. I specialised for a while in copying, restoring, enlarging and enhancing old prints.

I still have all my old darkroom equipment.

Lens performance varies a lot and is not limited by manufacturer and can depend on what use and effects you want from it. For example one lens supplied with Zenith cameras is sought after and carries premium prices compared with similar lenses from other manufacturers.

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
@CH
Apart from ebay, you might also stand a chance of selling the 650 & 18-55 lens (most kit 18-55 lenses are nothing special - I have several in the cupboard that I have never used) on Gumtree, Sphock or "Craigslist London" - but you must obviously "avoid" following some of the leads!
