Can I setup a system to receive Czech sat TV in the UK ?

Hi,

I have a friend of mine from the Czech republic living in the UK who wants to receive Czech Sat TV whilst she is in the UK.

She wondered if this was possible with her existing Sky box.
I have already told her that this is not possible, as it will not descramble anything other than Sky provided channels. (I assume I am correct in this, please let me know if I am incorrect.)

However I was wondering if it was technically possible to rig up another Sat receiver box to enable her to get Czech Sat TV whilst she is here?

With a much bigger dish and a different stb it can be received however I would suggest you read the thread here which generally puts you in the picture
 
Yes you can, there a couple of Free To Air channels on Astra 19.2, a 60cm dish should do it with any digital receiver. :)

I've looked at the thread you mentioned. Lots of useful info. Rolf, I think that she only has a Sky mini dish and a Sky receiver, (Last time I visited I was busy setting up a plasma screen.) I know she is on a budget for this, so to clarify do I need a separate 60cm+ dish and receiver (I presume the mini dish is too small.) Having read the thread that Topper gave me, it sounds like a 1.2m dish would be a better idea for decent reception?

From the thread it looks as though this can be done quite cheaply by getting a (legal) subscription card and Cryptoworks CAM ? from her address in Czech. Then sourcing a receiver, lnb, dish etc in the UK. One other thought, If I have to get a separate dish, can I use that for their Sky reception as well by putting it on a positioner ? Or does that get too complex?

I have found that their free to air CT24 (like BBC News) channel can be had via the Internet on a stream from the Czech TV news channel, so I have pointed her at that for now, but it would be nice to get her a decent set of Czech channels on the bigger screen.

(For info I have been out of this game for some time, my main interest is Home Cinema, but I setup a motorised dish for a mate of mine back in the analouge days, about 12 years ago.)

(I will only be able to check back on this thread on Tuesday or Wednesday night, I have got to work away from home for a couple of days, and that kicks off with a 4am start this morning so I need to sleep. U-zzz If the guy setting off fireworks over the road will let me

If she wants to keep her Sky system operable, best to leave well alone and go for the separate 1.2m dish, it needs to be a reasonable quality one, with a good LNB, as the signal on Astra 23.5 is hard to pull in. :)
 
Just checked that I can get the 23.5°e CzechLink channels on my old 80cm dish here in the estuary (100% cloud cover).

I'm about the same distance from the centre of the footprint as Southampton.

If you go the official card route be careful with the cryptoworks cam as there are many different versions. Confirm with your Czech contacts which cams work.
 
That's interesting BB, can you post that in the fringe reception section, there is a sticky thread there for 23.5E. :)

We have some mebers in Southampton, will see if one of them will check this, but i find it unlikely, as up in Berkshire, not too far away, 1.2m is required.
 
Well I have to apologise - I checked again later in the evening and got too low a signal to clear the channels on the 80cm dish.

I've given it 24 hours to check at various times and my conclusion is that 80cm is only just good enough between about 9am & 5pm but no good outside those times. I hadn't realised that 23.5°e was another footprint that varies through the day (brings back memories of the 5°e story).

I'm guessing that a 1m dish could be enough to guarantee getting the Slovak channels all the time, but I can no longer check that.

Another thought. A dragon cam will clear CT1, CT2, CT Sport, Prima TV, Noe & some Czech radio. It won't clear the premium channels. Nothing is guaranteed of course, it could stop working at any time.
