Obviously LED lamps are more energy efficient ...but never tried this before so advice needed from someone who has ..
150W exterior IR motion detector Flood lamp ...uses short halogen ..
But these are always failing and energy greedy ..so wondered if I could pay a little more and straight swap the halogen bulb for a LED variety ?
Dont want to have to take down the flood lamp ...so bulb replacement is preferable.
Next question ...
the short halogen I think is either 100 or 150Watt ..so what is the LED equivalent ?

Just free thinking here. You may find that an equivalent LED replacement is not available size for size for the halogen bulb. Obviously there are PIR controlled LED lamp assemblies but I think they are purpose designed.

I'd be happy to be proved wrong though.

There's this kind of thing VS that are supposed to retro fit into an existing 118mm 150watt halogen lamp, they are rated at 9watts. Whether it will physically fit inside your existing fitting ??.
They are around £16, might be less hassle to replace the old one with a 10watt led flood or pir/flood for similar price.

Does the LED replacement use the same voltage as the halogen one? In fact what voltage is the halogen lamp? Probably mains but worth checking.

Yep tis rectified mains usually switched through a Triac by the PIR ...
So I assume you can just retrofit the flood with a 240v Led array ...as it is DC .
I figured they were available but thought it best to ask first.

Foco 10W led + PIR = 14€...Ebay: 351554515400

The old detectors 500W halogens have maximum 6Amperios have a relay that can easily control multiple LED bulbs.
Normally have the plate IR control and behind that comment with the control relay.
You can take food to 230VAC for some external LED lights extras or putting one inside the focus (which I have to 15x11'5cm), the focus 10W LED goes well (11'2x8'3cm) OK.

Change the halogen bulb to put out more expensive led by the issue of dissipation of the LED.
If you have heatsinks free you can do it, otherwise not worth it.

Remember, the sink is very very expensive in general.

Old light bulbs on the farm so I have them (3x10W LED), after the summer will update with microwave detectors in sealed boxes I will (1-12 meters).

Topic mosquitoes and other bugs according to the temperature of light.
2700K-3000K without mosquitoes, warm light.
5000K-6000K with mosquios, cold light.

On the porch light all warm and one cold away from light, go all the bugs, also praying mantises put the boots.
In the Sierra de Madrid (1000 meters) we have everything.

Old pipes saving cold / blue light (15-20W) with 2 cups yellow plastic stop having / attract bugs.
They are like disposable white, in the camping section usually have.

If you want to blur the light of the LED (10W led hurts) vessels 6x7cm are ideal, with a drop of loctite on the edge sticks, if does not exceed 50ºC temperature leds, would last years, if you exceed this temperature wil least 50,000 hours burn their estimated life (+/- 1 year).
