Can't find any satellites with new kit

I bought a Labgear HD satellite kit. I mounted it on the chimney and pointed it in the direction advised and inclined the dish as advised and rotated the LNB, spookily as advised. I connected the SLX meter to the LNB and the cable to the other side of the meter. I connected the cable to the box and the box to the telly. I switched on and the meter when cranked up shows 4. The box shows "noch" which I presume means No Channel. I rotated the dish, I adjusted the angle of the dish and the angle of the LBN. The meter never fluctuates at all.

Have I got a duff LNB?

When I bought it I thought I would be able to pick up one of the many satellites, I didn't realise it would have to be 28.2°. That is directly through the trees. My question is: Shouldn't there be some signal as I slowly rotate the dish?
 
hello,
you will only pick up what satellite it aligned to.
if you are going for 28 east that you will pick nup free service like bbc and itv channels.
how far is the trees from the house?
if the dish is 50 meters from the trees and the trees and 10 meters high you may not have a problem.
the lnb being bad from the box may happen one in 1,500 lnb so that is not likely.
the lnb should be rotated just a tad in the holder.
if the lnb is pointing to the 6 on the clock for 28 degrees satellite it should be at about 7 on the clock facing the dish.
this sets up the scew.
the cable should have done correct as well.
the receiver powers up the converter on the dish.
if you can measure the voltage from the box should be 18 v dc horz or 14 v dc vert.
if there is no voltage the cable connoctors are wrong and no voltage is geting to the converter and no signal.
if you have no voltmeter the tong test is ok.
if you tuch your tong on the connoctor you will get a 18 volts bite on your tong.
its like a 9 v battery bite.
this should isolate some faults.

The meter adjustment is for sensitivity, anti-clockwise for most sensitivity, clockwise normally for attenuation, so use it initially on the fully turned down setting. If you still get no fluctuation, try putting your hand over the LNB, it should register a change.

Most common mistakes are bad "F" connector connections, dish elevation too high (should only be leaning slightly back from the vertical) and people assuming that pointing in the general direction is good enough.

If there are trees surrounding you, it may be that they are blocking the line of sight.
