I don't see the point of BBC 4 or 3 HD though. Almost all the programmes are upscaled.

Surely virtually everything shown on BBC 3 is available in HD now? And there is some good Scandinavian stuff in HD which would look nice on BBC 4, eg The Bridge.

Am I the only person who thinks bbc four is a bit pointless, most of the time showing 4:3 black and white programmes and old top of the pops episodes from the 80's. How often will they show hd content

Presumably the upscaling done by professional broadcast equipment is much better than your satellite box / tv can manage. Also, HD channels have a higher bit rate than their SD equivalents. I would rather see upscaled HD than more +1 / other repeat channels.

So all that extra clairty will make paedo Jimmy Saville will look even more grotesque than before!*

*one imagines TOTP repeats no longer include Jimmy Saville episodes!

yes, and what is even more important: they upscale the SDI signal, the uncompressed data. Our TVs are home have to upscale the MPEG2 SD picture, which has already been compressed.
So while the picture is still not HD if upscaled, you don't have to magnify all those artefacts.

There should be plenty of HD content available on both of these channels - I'm pretty sure the BBC insist on the majority of content they commission (if not all) being delivered to them in HD these days.

Looks like bitrate has taken a hit. Looking at Soul Men at the minute and bitrate average for the last few minutes was 3.7Mbs. I remember people moaning when bitrate on BBC HD was reduced to 10Mbs.

Compare with Sky sports 1 HD, bitrate currently 17.3Mbs.
