Now, having sort of realised that a PoE solution is probably not what I need, does anyone have any more suggestions on reasonably-priced decent analogue- or Ethernet-based systems to consider as I think I would prefer to go forward and buy/install one (and one of my immediate party-wall neighbours will be very happy for me do that to cover their property as well because they cannot afford to, or know how, do it as I confirmed today!)?

If you can do a PoE can you run a coax with power, (Siamese cable) as hard line is the only way to go in my opinion, as too many things can go wrong with WIFI.

Either wiring approach would be OK with me as, if I located the DVR/NVR in the attic, the cable runs are relatively short - OTOH, most cheap consumer-oriented cable-based systems available in the UK seem to be power-over-coax and not Siamese-cable, or with the PSUs adjacent to the cameras - I think that the latter may be common in the US but not here (possibly because most of our residential properties are much smaller than in the US, and so don't require long cable runs with the associated power supply voltage drops).

Fitted one of these for a friend about 4 weeks ago ( in Spain, he brought it from the UK )
He seems quite happy with it. Cannot rate the functionality via the internet, but quality of picture etc looked good on the TV when I finished fitting it. He is also happy with the remote access via the smartphone.
Not sure about the security via the web, only as strong as you make it. No problems running any of the cameras using the provided 18m cables, ( other than getting about 10m wound up and hidden on the two short runs )
( never saw the mouse though! )

The Swan systems seem to be the most widely-available systems here at the moment and so must be on the possibles list - wonder if there are others?

I think I will need 5 cameras outside (if you DID manage to identify the property on the web then you will know why!), with the possibility to add more indoors, and so an 8-channel system seems the way to go.

PS: most of my cable runs will be much less than 18m, and so is it not possible to shorten the cables because they look something like RG59 with standard BNC connections on the ends?

Yes, the cables are pre-formed but could be shortened if you really wanted to, not too difficult, but could be a little ugly on the eye.
Same website has a Yale system with 15m cables, and I´m sure there are systems available which will take more cameras if required.

With respect to your place, no, I didn´t even look, a true magician does not need to!

You can pick up the system a bit cheaper, if you part it out, and build it your self.

The video and power combination cable is sold in lengths of 5 to 50 meters.

I would not go with a Swan system, you will be very disappointed in the video quality and the night vision.

Get a good DVR and then look over your site placement for the cameras, get some good ones that would cover the area you need with high quality video and IR lighting.

For good quality you may spend up to 1,000 or more, it may be a heavy price but is replacing your stuff worth going cheap?

I think I can make a decent job of terminating the cables without making too much of an ugly connection (might need a bit of practice, but that's life!). Thanks for the help so far!

For my info, where can you get the combo cable? (might use than - but still a maybe).

Both myself and my close neighbours have additional PIR lighting and so that should help - all depends on how "good" the cameras actually are (?).

BTW: neither of our gardens are more than about 30-35m long, and quite narrow (5-7m!) - especially by US standards!

If you consider that a 2-story end-terrace house is a "flat" then I am somewhat "disappointed" - OTOH, it might be considered a "condo" in US parlance (albeit a small one :)).

Thanks for the lead - unfortunately the longest lead they have at the moment is 1.5m which is a "bit" short of what I would need - maybe "tomorrow" they will have something rather "longer" :)!

20m? Probably need more like 10-15m in most cases, except if I wanted to run to the end of the garden. Nevertheless, Thx anyway.

BTW: did you use a Swan system?

I have a cheap Chinese one:

I have a 20 m combo lead, that was the one that gave me power problems. I solved it by running a separate power lead from my garage.
