Channel changing Delays, and recording problems

Hi... Had my Thomson HD receiver now for about a year and a half and never really experienced any problems. Changing channels was relatively fast and a few recorded programmes worked well.
However recently this all started to change, and things have become very frustrating.
The first thing I noticed was the response time in changing channels. Sometimes it can take between 5-10 seconds to get a response. Even when flipping through the EPG.
Also I recorded something and went to watch and the recording was 'stop-start' all the way through.
I have read through lots of posts but cant find what the problem can be.
For a fix I have tried to re-boot by switching off to standby, turning the power off and then re-starting. This slightly improves the problem, but its back to normal in no time.
Can anyone help? Would a Total re-set help?

The clue is in the word Thomson. They are notorious for having poor capacitors in the power supply unit. Failure of one or more of these caps can cause all sorts of weird and wonderful problems.

Unplug it, disconnect the wires and pop the top off. See if theres any bulging caps around the power supply.


Keep your fingers well clear - some power supplies can give a nasty kick even when unplugged.

Thanks for the reply. I am not too technical with Electronics. What do you mean 'bulging caps'? Would they be burnt out or larger than normal? If I find some, should I take the box to a technician to get them replaced?

Bulging power supply capacitors, possibly also discoloured.

Bulging:

To curve outward.
To swell up.
To stick out; protrude.

Worth getting a repair technician to carry out if suspect.
