Channel Master Paint Touchup

Hi, just acquired a 1m Channel Master dish, it was slightly damaged at the edge so have repaired it with some fibreglass polyester filler.

Would now like to touch up the paint work to get rid of the patch work green from the filler.

What I've found out so far is:

• Channel Master standard light gray color is Pantone Matching System (PMS) #428C which works out as HEX Code: #D1D5D8
• It's a Water-based acrylic paint

How would I go about getting a colour match in the UK?

Closest RAL Standard I have found is a RAL 7047 Telegrey 4.

Anyone know of a UK supplier for this type/colour of paint in small amounts, there's no need to totally repaint the dish because the damaged area is small.

Any help gratefully accepted.

Well you wont get an exact match even using the OEM paint as the color more then likely has faded over time due to the sun and weather, it would be better for a full fresh coat of paint.

Or take the dish down to the paint store and have then do a computer match of the current color.

If you have kept the true couture of the dish and decide to re-paint it, then use some aluminum paint on the fiberglass filler to provide the reflective surface, then re-paint the dish.

How badly was it damaged?
You didn't have to do any straightening did you?

Found some Ford Polar Grey which was the closest I could get in Halfords in a spray can.

Masked of most of the dish and sprayed the rim around the edges so it all matches in, all that's left to do now is do a slight touch up by hand on a small patch on the face of the dish which was also filled.

Late in the evening so went with Hispasat at 30°W just to test out the feedhorn, lnb and make sure the dish was okay.

Will try to post pictures in the morning.

hello remlap,

i've just received a 1metre channel master this morning, its got some slight damage.

thinking of repairing it like you did to yours because it will be a hassle to return.

can this be repaired, the dent in the front hasn't gone through the dish, just rather cracked the fibreglass on the back.

please remove the pics if I have broken any rules because they are also posted in another thread.

The name for the filler I used was Plastic Padding Glass Fibre Paste:

Looks likely we bought it from same person since I've read your other post and came with the same set of parts. I had hoped it would be a one off.

looking on halfords website, I dont need to fill a hole just cover up where the fibreglass as splintered at the back.

I was thinking to get some resin and a sheet of fibreglass tissue and just place it over to hopefully seal it up.

will this work ?

Yeah actually that might be better option since the dish is not missing any fibre glass and a relatively flatter surface.

I am really disappointed that someone else has had to go and repair what looks to be brand new dishes.

well if there had been some more cardboard around the dishes they wouldn't have got bashed.

anyway, I have already got a 90cm fibreglass channel master up on a jaeger 1224 motor and was going to swap and put the 1metre up in its place. I can get from around 42e to 58w.

With fibreglass tissue do I need to use hardener with the resin ?

Depends when, where and how the damage occurred.

The known sample of two on this Forum both arrived with damage - but did they also leave with damage? Excuse my suspicious mind, but combine that (meaningless) statistic with the surprisingly low price .............

However, the saving grace is they actually do seem good value despite everything.

The packaging might be a dead herring - we ordered a new garden bench a couple of weeks ago and it arrived in a cardboard outer carton that was well and truly knackered - Signed receipt "Box damaged" but accepted it: Absolutely no damage whatsoever to the contents.

for small- hole body repairs on vehicles i use " bridging filler" -- thats chopped fibreglss matting soaked with resin - you add hardener same as with the fibreglass paste
then use a thin layer of paste later to get a finer finnish

yes resin and matting would work ok --
but the bridging filler - that is ready mixed resin and matting is easier to work with -- it smooth,s out quite well and will cover and seal the cracked area on the back of the dish .
i.v been using it recently to repair broken corners of the fibreglass bodywork of a towing caravan

its waterproof , but the brand i used was coloured pink so it needed painting over to blend in

Any outdoor rated acrylic paint will do, but don't use gloss or semi-gloss paint on the front side, you can also use epoxy based paint for boats.

If the front is cracked then it would be a good idea to sand it smooth fill the cracks with automotive bondo, then a good hi quality aluminum paint under a coat of what ever the top coat will be, the aluminum paint will overheat the LNB when the sun gets in front of the dish, that's why it has to be covered over.

Sanding the front side down to bare fiberglass will remove the reflective coating for the RF signal, it has to be re-applied for the dish to function again, you cant get the stuff that they use so you can use any aluminum based paint to sub for it.

OK after zooming in on your photos I see the damage a bit better, don't worry about the front it's not that bad.

The back side can be fixed with the 2 part epoxy you can get at most hardware stores, just mix it up and spread it over the cracked part, (dish facing down so it wont drip) it will harden up just fine..

I use Bondo for automotive body work, it does wonders and is totally water proof.
