Chas Hodges has died from organ failure following treatment for oesophageal cancer. He was diagnosed with the cancer in February 2017 and had been undergoing treatment.

I'm sure a lot of us have enjoyed the songs that he and Dave Peacock recorded. They were never cool but hugely enjoyable with their bright and breezy compositions.

I'm not so sure about the 'not cool' part, they did write and perform the theme tune for Only Fools and Horses.

You are right, though they were mentioned by John last time I went to his house

Both songs are performed by Sullivan, and not – as is sometimes thought – by Nicholas Lyndhurst.Sullivan had intended for Chas & Dave to sing it, since they were an act associated with Cockney-style music, but they were unavailable having just recorded a hit record with "Ain't No Pleasing You", so he was persuaded to do it himself by Ray Butt.The new theme was also arranged by Hazlehurst. Chas & Dave did later contribute to the show, performing "Down to Margate", the closing credits song for "The Jolly Boys' Outing".
 
saw them in the support lineup for Led Zeppelin, Knebworth 1979 - enjoyed them a lot, sad news indeed
 
R.I.P Chas. There's always room for the comedy record. Exception - Benny Hill.

The facts
John Sullivan wrote and performed the song to Only Fools & Horses. It was widely reported that originally John wanted Chas and Dave to sing it, but they were busy, so BBC told him he would have to sing it himself, of course we are talking from the second series onwards. The first series was just a cheesy saxophone tune composed by Ronnie Hazlehurst. Of course many years later Chas and Dave did get the call up to sing the title songs for the Christmas Special episode, The Jolly Boys Outing
