Ok its only October but as questions are being asked already heres the basic info if anyone new wants to join in this year :)

We start with midnight in Auckland at lunchtime uk time (using the coverage from one of the fta news channels) and work steadily westwards around the globe hour by hour seeing what sort of ceremonies and fireworks we can find in assorted countries.

In 2008 we found a dozen or so different midnights with the final one for most folks being midnight UK / Portuguese time. Most of the time we only use the fta channels so any basic fta receiver is fine for joining in the fun. (We occasionally drop reports on from one or two of the scrambled channels just as an additional record of whats happening elsewhere)

One or two night owls stayed up and reported on the American celebrations in the wee small hours of January 1st.

The (lengthy) report of the 2008/9 fun can be found here

http://www.satellites.co.uk/satelli...33-chasing-midnight-new-years-eve-2008-a.html

If you want to join in this year then you can watch most of the fun if you have access to Hotbird 13E

More details will be provided in early December :)

Temporarily made a sticky so its easy to find.

A special request - any forum members reading the thread on Dec 31st please make a post or two & say hello - I want this to be the biggest and best chasing midnight yet :D

Now I often get asked "why do you do it??" The answer to that is always the same - I absolutely detest NYE and for years got very depressed as the year ended. Leading the chase on a couple of forums keeps me amused and gives me a great day :)

And we learn a little about how other other cultures & countries celebrate - get to see fabulous firework displays!

The thread will be opened up in mid December for comments & questions prior to the big event.

No new channels for new timezones this year so looks like this is the approximate timetable

1100 - Auckland - Sky News / BBC News
1300 - Sydney - Sky News / BBC News
1400 - Vladivostok - Russia Today
1500 - temple in Japan - JSTV1 /Korea - Arirang
1600 - China - CCTV4 or CCTV9
1700 - Thailand - Thai Global TV / Vietnam - VTV4
1800 - Kazakhstan - Caspionet / Kyrgyzstan - K+
1830 - India - Amrita TV or NDTV (scrambled on 28E)
1900 - Uzbekistan - Uzbek TV (only on 40E so most folk pick up Dinner For One here)
1930 -Afghanistan - RTA (a faint chance - hasnt done anything notable before)
1945 - Nepal - Nepali TV on 9E (often scrambled - didnt show anything in 2008)

After this more channels become available so the group starts breaking up and watching various things

2000 - Georgia - Adjara TV / Armenia - C1 / Azerbaijan - Lider TV, Shant TV or Az 1
2100 - Moscow - one of the main Russian channels
2200 - numerous eastern European countries including Albania - Als&t, TVSH / Turkey - TRT Turk, Romania - TVRi, Greece - ERT, etc
2300 - Germany - ARD, Nigeria - AIT International or Loveworld
0000 - Portugal - RTPi or if you are really desperate UK BBC1 London or Scotland on 28E

Lets hope the weather is kind this year - a couple of years back many folks had their dishes blown out of alignment in vicious gales.

A complete list of time zones can be found here:

BBC Alba is an alternative to the usual BBC midnight.

The programme, Bliadhna Mhath Ur, is like Jools Hollands Hootenanny except it is the real thing!!!

Runs from 23:30-01:00 with Morag MacDonald presenting various music and comedy skits. It's the same procedure every year.

Sadly, viewers don't get free whisky or shortbread, though they may be too drunk to care at that stage. :-googly

If you have children or aged parents in the room make sure you select the right Loveworld and not a channel with a similar name or it really will be a New Year to remember... Humping

I should have mentioned that Christmas Eve - Boxing Day is the time to go channel hopping.

All the Christmas idents, trailers and all other forms of channel branding etc are wall-to-floor. New Years Eve - New Years Day is not quite as good for idents as Christmas fatigue has often set in, technically they call it a "huge hangover".

The twee Christmas programmes are being wheeled out.

Today I have seen kids doing cossak dances wearing funny hats while a man dressed as a bear frightens the babies (its traditional!), dreadful sch-lager with lashings of extra yodeling and circus performances that you can marvel at no matter what the language.

Tomorrow will be even better.

Many of the Yank news services take New York at 5am. (?)

I think Brasilia is utc -2 or -3 so Recorde News is a possibility.

A few night owls have kept the reports going for another 2 or 3 time zones the last couple of years although most of us give up at midnight - anything past then is too late for me ceratinly.

RBB Berlin or Brandenburg are better choices than ADR Das Erste. (They are the same channel with different news programmes.)

The ARD programme is only 15 minutes and starts at 10.59.

RBB starts at 9.30, with the party music starting at 9.45, then the countdown starts at 10.30 with live reports from the huge 2km long party at Brandenburger Tor in Berlin. Followed by more stuff about the 20th anniversary of the wall falling.

:-party1

So much more of a party. :-cheers

Well Sky News was a washout. Useless bu99ers. Vesti & Euronews seemed to be the best options this year. Lots of fireworks off the Auckland SKy Tower :D

BBC News says they will be following the celebrations westwards (presumably the main ones anyway)
