Hard to believe but the end of the year is approaching rapidly once again so its time to start thinking about the annual New Years Eve fun.
Yes its only November but some folks might want to set some extra kit up and with the short days might need a dryish weekend to set up.
If you havent seen the annual lunacy before basically it works like this - we start with midnight in Auckland at lunchtime uk time (using the coverage from one of the fta news channels) and work steadily westwards around the globe hour by hour seeing what sort of ceremonies and fireworks we can find in assorted countries.
In 2009 we found a dozen or so different midnights with the final one for most folks being midnight UK / Portuguese time. Most of the time we only use the fta channels so any basic fta receiver is fine for joining in the fun. (Although fta is the name of the game we occasionally drop reports in from one or two of the scrambled channels just as an additional record of whats happening elsewhere). One or two night owls stay up and report on the American celebrations in the wee small hours of January 1st. Thats past my bed time so its nice to catch up with the final few reports when I surface on the 1st.
The lengthy 2009/10 thread can be found here:
http://www.satellites.co.uk/forums/meeting-place/160375-chasing-midnight-new-years-eve-2009-a.html
although be warned it runs to over 300 posts.
If you want to join in this year then you can watch most of the fun if you have access to Hotbird 13E
So "why do you do it??" The answer to that is always the same - I have always absolutely detested NYE and for years got very depressed as the year ended. Or ended up in a pub spending a fortune. Leading the fun on the forum keeps me amused - I have multiple satellite receivers monitoring anything up to three channels simultaneously - although thats a bit extreme to be honest
And we learn a little about how other other cultures & countries celebrate year end - get to see fabulous firework displays!
The thread will be opened up in mid December for comments & questions prior to the big evening
Temporarily made a sticky so its easy to find.
