Hard to believe but the end of the year is approaching rapidly once again so its time to start thinking about the annual New Years Eve fun.

Yes its only November but some folks might want to set some extra kit up and with the short days might need a dryish weekend to set up.

(And its only a matter of time until someone asks about it!) :-rofl2

If you havent seen the annual lunacy before basically it works like this - we start with midnight in Auckland at lunchtime uk time (using the coverage from one of the fta news channels) and work steadily westwards around the globe hour by hour seeing what sort of ceremonies and fireworks we can find in assorted countries. We have a few drinks, a bit of banter on the forum, and just generally have a bit of a laugh and enjoy the various ceremonies..

If you havent joined in before most of the channels we use are on Hotbird 13E. Most of the channels we get reports on are fta so anyone can watch, although some folks kindly provide info about whats happening on a few of the encrypted channels.

There is one major change over previous years this time - Russia has changed its time zone by staying on summer time so Moscow will be 2000 not 2100 as in previous years, which is rather a shame as that clashes with the fireworks in Dubai.

Temporarily made a sticky so its easy to find

Ive closed the thread and will reopen it towards the middle of December for further discussion :)

Same procedure as last year?? ;) :-worship

No new countries available to us via satellite in Europe this year, so herew how the time zones stack up with some comments about the possibilities:

1100 - Auckland New Zealand - Sky News / BBC News - always a good one for fireworks
1300 - Sydney Australia - Sky News / BBC News - also always a good one for fireworks
1400 - Vladivostok Russia - Russia Today - erratic coverage doesnt always get done at the top of the hour
1500 - Japan - JSTV1 -always goes clear at 1445 & shows temples in Japan
1500 - Korea - Arirang - the Bosingak bell in Korea
1600 - China - CCTV4 or CCTV9 - a good end of year show
1700 - Thailand - Thai Global TV / Vietnam - VTV4 - variable, VTV4 did a show for the first time in 2010
1800 - Kazakhstan - Caspionet - the first of the ex Soviet countries - Presidential speeches common here
1830 - India - various - parties on the beaches of Goa fireworks in Delhi etc
1900 - Uzbekistan - Uzbek TV - only on 53E so most folk pick up Dinner For One here
1930 -Afghanistan - RTA - unlikely- never noted as doing anything as the Afghan NY is in March!!
1945 - Nepal - Nepali TV on 9E - unlikely - another odd calendar - their NY starts in April!!

After this more channels become available so the group starts breaking up and watching various things

2000 - Armenia - C1 / Azerbaijan - Lider TV, Shant TV or Az 1 - ex Soviet countries, lots of Presidential speeches
2000 - Moscow - one of the main Russian channels - always good for fireworks, even in the blizzard in 2010!
2000 - Dubai - one of the Dubai channels - been very good for fireworks the last couple of years
2030 - Iran - most unlikely, nothing ever seen as their calendar is the same as Afghanistan
2100 - a leap in the dark this year with Moscow moving forward an hour. Possibilities are Sudan, Kuwait, Iraq & Saudi Arabia
2200 - numerous eastern European countries - normally good for pop concerts
2300 - Germany - ARD or numerous German regionals - only place to be is with one of the German channels
2300 - Nigeria - AIT International or Loveworld - variable in recent years
0000 - Portugal - RTPi - RTPi very variable in recent years,
0000 - UK BBC1 London or Scotland on 28E - Scotland always has a bloke strangling a cat up on the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle
0000 - Iceland RUV via the webstream - very quiet end to the year here

There are a few gaps but thats because there isnt anything suitable on air!

A good timezone site:

Can't promise to be able to contribute much ...particularly as I shall be still working during the day on Christmas Eve..Hopefully not on New years Eve :)
but assuming the storms dont blow down the Alcoa ..I'll leave it pointing extreme west ..and try and pick something up from South America ...
What time approx can I expect midnight in say ....Bolivia or Mexico ?

Ive just found an old dvd someone sent me from their zapping around the channels on NYE 2005-6. Its fascinating seeing how things compare to now

Plenty of terrible variety shows on the east European channels as usual :D

Strangest one Ive found yet though is the almost naked ladies doing a marching routine on TV5 Europe :-lmao Very jiggly!

Ive also found this rather nice rock version of the fabulous Russian anthem played out at midnight. Its by the group Lubeh.

Not much now Moscow is +4. Its a leap in the dark.

Might be a good time to pick up DF1 if the timings work out.

Rosssiiiyya svyascheeeeennaya, naaaasha derzhaaava... erm... ahem....

Yes, MSK time is now GMT+4 in the winter and GMT+3 in the summer, so don't miss it! I wonder if UK could abolish DST malarkey too....

By the way, the band singing the anthem is very popular in Russia and have been around since 1989! I even went to see them in London when they came over last year.... motherland and all that :p
