At least when used over their rated (assuming they are even rated at all) voltages:

Haha yes! I used to like watching Kenny Everett's show when I was a kid.

Back in the 60's, when I was an apprentice TV engineer, we used a neon screwdriver, (held back to front) to detect if there was EHT present in the valve driven line output stage. If you waved it about near the line output valves (though not too near) and it lit up chances were there was EHT present. If your finger drew an arc it was definitely there!!!......Not really a recommended practice.....

Andy's the master of high voltage. I keep meaning to go round and do some experiments with him. Got a massive transformer for him which arcs up the walls and gives some proper lightening.

Cheap neon screwdrivers are only lethal if you use them for purposes other than what they were designed for, pump that sort of voltage through any piece of 'safe' electrical equipment and you will get the same result, I have to say the neon screwdriver was very impressive in its insulating abilities

But not what your thread title implies.......cheap neon screwdrivers are proven in the video to be better insulated than originally designed for therefore not lethal or dangerous unless used for a purpose other than for which they were designed. Q.E.D.
