Checking signal with just a LNB

Standard sky box, single LNB.

Hope I'm posting this in the right place :)

Doing a bit of messing around really and was wondering as I've got a digisat meter (which has a battery pack to power it) if I connect up an LNB to the lnb port and point it in the right direction if it would find signal with just the lnb or does it need to be on a dish ? (worth mentioning I maedc a 12v battery pack for it so I don't need a feed from the receiver for power)

I only ask as I wanted to install a dish in my mother place but the building she lives in is a bit odd. What I was hoping to do with this idea is basically walk around with the meter and lnb connected and figure out where I could locate this dish as near as possible to her windows.

Shes not enthusiastic about strangers in her home so independant and sky installers are a no no.

So hoping to sort this out for her at the weekend but before buying a dish just wanted to make sure I could get a signal first.

I didn't fancy walking around with my meter and a dish connected to it :)

Hopefully someone knows what I'm wittering on about.

Appreciate some advice.
 
No, it won't work. You need a dish attatched.

Go to dishpointer.com to get your pointing angles.
 
Ahh I see, I'll build up the dish and and put the lnb on and wave it around like a metal detector and see what I find :)

I was just hoping there was a way to check signal strength without walking about with a dish which I don't mind doing.

Waving it around will only give you a sore hand or wrist, you need to be mm perfect in two planes to receive a signal
 
so when I hold the dish I must move it left to right very slowly while checking the meter for max output then up and down for max output drill mount it all onto the wall and double check it and tighten it all up and bobs your uncle ?

I've not forgotten to skew it :)
 
...and a £5 compass will help you find the rough angles required :)

what your trying to achieve is neon impossible unless you have a steady hand or a professional meter :D

I knew that compass I was given a few christmases would come in handy one day :p

Not sure how professional my meter is but its a digisat one _http://www.satellitesuperstore.com/satellitemeters.htm aboutjust over half way down. Its no horizone or promax but its fairly sensitive.

I guess I idea is not the best. I guess I should just work it out properly mount and align from there.

What my original plan was to just hole the lnb connected up well with the dish now and move it around slowly till I see the bar graph on the meter move up to over 60% and say BINGO max install right here :)

If there were just the one satellite up there, your idea would have worked, but unfortunately there are several strong satellites fairly close together and your type of meter will not identify which one you have found.

Unless you think there is a line of sight problem with trees or buildings, finding a site for the dish should be achievable with a compass.

PS. Always worth reading the rules before posting, as there are some, which if broken, mean an instant ban. ;)
 
Yeah just got through reading the rules, a bit of a lapse on my part. Read and understood :)

I'll have a go with a compass and give it a go.
