Hi, Has anyone any idea if I can receive any English channels in Chios, Greece. This is an island between Samos and Lesbos in the East Eagean. We have a 1m dish at the moment that was installed locally, but they are not very clued up with UK channels. We can change to a 2m dish but really need to hear from anyone in this area as to if it will work. Please help.
 
I recommend you do a forum search for Greece and see what threads you find rather than re-invent the wheel, but a 3.7 seems to be the requirement for 24/7 reception but note with fringe reception like this a few Kilometres can make a very big difference
 
We have some friends who have a holiday home on Lesbos. They have a 4.2m dish in order to be able to get all SKY channels (incl HD) 24/7. However they have just been told they may have to take the dish down as it does not have the "necessary permissions" (I take that to mean the Greek equivalent of UK Planning Permission).

P.S. we have same requirements here in Cyprus about big dishes, but the rules are rarely enforced.
 
You have to differentiate in between Astra 2D and the rest. For latter i cannot tell you for sure but roughly expect to get everything on 2.40m, probably also on 1.80m, always quality dishes (I'd be careful with MABO, have heared some negative things lately). First is rather chaotic and differs from place to place but be aware of something extremely big.

My recommendation:

Does the 4.2m receive anything off 2D ? If so i'd be interested in which frequencies are beeing received and if so 24/7 or not.
With this size, it would be a shame if there are no other LNBs for 19.2E/23.5E/26E installed as well. Suppose that there wouldn't be any problems in receptions as well concerning Astra 1F and Badr 6. For Astra 3A i'm not that sure.

As far as i know in greek towns (on the countryside you can do whatever you like) you are allowed to install any dish size on your own roof as long as the height is not over 4m. You just get to the Poleodomia (authority for building) and get such an A4 document. A lawyer wrote about this in the greek sat board SDTV some years ago.

It gets all the BBC and ITV etc etc channels on 2D .
 
Really every single 2D frequency ? 4.2m (by the way, which manufacturer ?) sounds very small for a complete 24/7 reception. I think quite some people now would like to see for every of the 16 2D frequencies some C/N values.

As in Cyprus you will get all the H polarised channe ls (and no V), or the other way round - I cannot remember which way round it is: no doubt others on this forum can advise on that. The ones on 2D you DO get inckude all the BBC etc UK main channels. I am not in Lesbos so I cannot give you any C/N values. The question was asked "what size dish etc is needed"; the question has been answered. If you buy a 4.2m dish you'll be getting ALL the main SKY/UK channels. What do you want?? A written guarantee??
 
It would just be interesting to see the different values of each 2D frequency and if there are big up and downs (time and heat dependence) so that some of those get below the threshold of the receiver. A DXer always is interested in details which might not interest at all 99% of the TV watchers. Since it's rare to read about 2D installations in the Aegean this would be the chance to learn more how the signal behaves in that area. As we know there is a zone around Rodos where all the Verticals can be gotten on 3m (BBC HD breaks through sometimes even on 2.30m Famaval) but the Horizontals behave much weaker. The opposite is in Northwestern Greece the case as well as in Cyprus. Maybe the NE Aegean is in an area where both polarizations are almost equally levelled and this is why i am interested in details. If it's unpossible to learn more than just forget my question. I understand that you are not able to check it remotely but it could have been that there is anybody near them that is able to do that or could have been that they themselves had mentioned that particular frequencies are not at all receivable even on that dish size or just part time of the day, especially now with higher temperatures.
